Het ontstond in de late achttiende eeuw, ontpopte zich in een mum van tijd tot een massamedium zonder weerga en trok in de negentiende eeuw vele miljoenen bezoekers.Het illusionistische effect van de panoramarotondes met hun gigantische schilderijen bezorgde de adembenemende ervaring middenin de voorstelling te staan en ze te beleven.Het diorama, een variant van het panorama, bracht bijkomende impressies, zoals beweging en licht- en donkereffecten.Vanaf 1836 deden rondreizende panorama???s en diorama???s regelmatig Antwerpen aan. In 1881 openden niet minder dan drie panorama???s hun deuren: een tijdelijk, en twee permanente rotondegebouwen.Het panorama met de Slag van Waterloo, geschilderd door Charles Verlat, bestond tot 1886. In de dierentuin kon men tot 1905 het panorama met de Slag van Worth gaan bekijken, een tafereel van Alfred Cluysenaar, gehuisvest in een elegant Moors paviljoen.Ook op de wereldtentoonstelling van 1894 in Antwerpen trokken panoramas en diorama???s veel volk. De concurrentie van nieuwe massamedia, met name cinema en geillustreerde tijdschriften, betekende het einde van deze ingenieuze spektakels. De ooit zo succesvolle Antwerpse panorama???s zijn onherroepelijk verdwenen en in de vergetelheid gesukkeld. In Kijkparadijzen voor het volk belichten de auteurs, Stefaan Grieten en Evelien Verniers, dit onbekend maar boeiend stukje Antwerps erfgoed. 470 g.
