A very early owner of this copy, Theodorus de Baer, purchased this volume in Cologne in 1555, and remarkably had an ex-libris produced from movable italic type, looking uncannily similar to that employed by the printer Isingrinus. This is the earliest example of a printed ex-libris we have seen. A very good, attractively bound copy of this scarce edition of one of the most popular humanist works of the early C16. Polydore Vergil (1470-1555) was an Italian scholar, historian and diplomat who spent many years in England where he is famous for his 'Anglica Historia' (1513; 1534). First published in 1499, 'De rerum inventoribus' was a Europe-wide success, both as an encyclopaedia and intriguing schoolbook. It is a history of inventions, which identifies 'inventors' as 'founders of the arts and other traditions in the distant past' and blends, within Renaissance 'inventio', the modern concepts of 'invention' (a creation produced anew) and 'discovery' (finding of something that was already there and making it known) (Atkinson, pp.2, 15). Part I provides an all-encompassing compendium of the origin of the world, the gods, the birth of humankind, the origin of languages, marriage and religion, gradually moving to 'inventors', from antiquity to Vergil's times, of disciplines (e.g., grammar, rhetoric, music, astrology, medicine, magic, necromancy, chiromancy, metallurgy, painting, horticulture, architecture, navigation), genres (e.g., tragedy, comedy), the city, law, the calendar, units for telling the time, and so on. Most interesting is the section on the invention of books, the first library and the 'discovery' of printing by Joannes Gutenberg, the first in Germany to find a way to print letters and to use a suitable new type of ink, in 1458. Nicolaus Jenson is mentioned as one of the earliest printers in Italy. The following section discusses the invention of letters, parchment and paper, mentioning Tirus, Cicero's servant, who invented the Tironian notes, the first Latin shorthand system. Parts IV-VIII focus mainly on religion. They discuss the founding of Christianity and the sacraments, ancient Christian offices, the festive celebration of relics, the origins and later ban of marriage for priests (in which the early annotator was interested), the origins of religious sacrifices, the foundation of monastic orders, concilia and the sect of the Simoniaci. La première traduction française semble avoir paru en 1527 selon un exemplaire de l'université de Glasgow, bien qu'une donnée contradictoire donne 1528 comme date de la première édition française en latin par Robert Etienne. Brunet donne 1499 pour la date de la première édition. Reliure en demi basane blonde marbrée début XIXème. Dos lisse à trois fleurons. Pièce de titre et de tomaison beige. Manque le papier de garde sur le plat supérieur du tome 1 et sur le plat inférieur du tome 2. Intérieur très frais. * Le livre des inventions de Vergil eut un succès durable au XVIème siècle. C'est le type même du livre sous la Renaissance, mêlant récits légendaires et sources historiques. Sous la forme d'articles, il est traité de toutes sortes d'inventions, du sel, de la poterie, de la peinture, du lin, de la musique. Le livre est aussi une histoire de la médecine et de la magie. Polydore Vergil a naturellement abondamment puisé dans les Anciens. Polydore Vergil (1470-1555) est né et mort à Urbino, après avoir étudié à Bologne et Padoue, il devint le secrétaire du duc d'Urbino et le chambellan d'Alexandre VI. Ses deux premiers écrits le rendirent célèbre et eurent une grande popularité : Proverbiorum libellus et De inventoribus rerum (en français Les Inventeurs des choses). En 1501 le pape l'envoya en Angleterre, devenant l'intime de Henri VII, ce dernier lui commanda une histoire d'Angleterre grâce à laquelle Polydore devint le premier historien moderne. Ne se contentant pas d'établir une simple chronique mais étudiant les événements, il influença tous les historiens futurs et même Shakespeare dans sa vision de l'histoire. Il revint dans son pays natal lors des changements religieux en Angleterre. The book is also a history of medicine and magic. Polydore Vergil naturally drew abundantly from the Ancients. Polydore Vergil (1470-1555) was born and died in Urbino; after studying in Bologna and Padua, he became secretary to the Duke of Urbino and chamberlain to Alexander VI. His first two writings made him famous and were very popular: Proverbiorum libellus and De inventoribus rerum (in French Les Inventeurs des choses). A handsome copy of this 'véritable encyclopédie, remplie de détails et d'anecdotes curieuses' (Caillet). First published in 1499, this treatise on printing, gunpowder, magic, astrology, astronomy, architecture, and medicine was blatantly critical of some Church practices which lead to its proscription by Papal Index. The present volume was lot 4298 in the Duke of Marlborough's infamous Whiteknights Library sale (June 1819) where it was bought for 11 shillings by the officer and philhellene Edward Blaquiere (1779-1832) (see: Catalogus Librorum qui in Bibliotheca Blandfordiensi, (1819) p. 203).
