"Full references are given for establishing the dates and outline of the career of each abbot or prior when known, but the information naturally varies in quantity from the richly documented lists of the Benedictine houses to the lesser cells where only a single name or date may be recorded. In all, some 500 houses are included, and an introduction discusses the nature, use and history of the lists, and examines critically the types of evidence on which they are based." Pp.48/278. Hardcover. Presumed first edition/first printing. xii, 445 p. General Peter Nicolaevitch Krassnoff (September 22, 1869 January 17, 1947), was Lieutenant General of the Russian army when the revolution broke out in 1917, and one of the leaders of the counterrevolutionary White movement afterward. He was also author of several historical fiction books on Russia. General Krassnoff became a Czarist émigré living in Berlin. During World War I, he commanded a Cossack brigade and a division, in August October 1917, of the 3rd Cavalry Corps. During the October Revolution, Alexander Kerensky appointed Krassnoff commander of the army, which was sent to Petrograd from the front to suppress the Bolshevik revolution. However, Krassnff was defeated and taken prisoner. He was released by the Soviet authorities on the condition that he would not continue his struggle against the revolution. He agreed to this but reneged on his promise to do so. With support from Germany, he equipped the army, which would oust the Soviets from the Don region in May June 1918. After Germany's defeat in World War I, he set his sights on the Entente powers in his search for allies. In January 1919, Krassnff was forced to acknowledge General Denikin's authority over the White movement. Krassnoffwas one of the founders of the Brotherhood of Russian Truth, an anti-communist organization with an underground network in Russia. In exile Krassnoff had written memoirs and several novels. Krassnoff''s novels were translated to English, German, French, Serbian and other European languages. During World War II, Krassnoff agreed to organize and head Cossack units out of White emigres and Soviet (mostly Cossack) prisoners of war, to be armed by the Germans. At the end of the war, Krassnoff and his men voluntarily surrendered to British forces in Austria. All of them were promised upon surrender by Major Davis that they, as White Russian emigres, would not be repatriated to the Soviets. On May 28, 1945, Pyotr Krassnoff was handed over to the Soviets He was sentenced to death and on January 17, 1947, he was executed by hanging. Good. No dust jacket. Cover has some wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on fep.
