In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 4to. 218pp. With vignette on title, full-page arms and 31 illustrations from plans and drawings in text (1 double-page). Publisher's wrappers with Leiden University arms on cover. History of one of the world's most important botanic gardens. Founded in 1587, the Leiden garden was a leading centre for research, and the acclimatization of plants especially those sent from the Dutch colonies in South East Asia and South Africa. Among its distinguished directors were Charles de l'Ecluse, Paul Hermann and Hermann Boerhaave. 8 tables in the appendix provide lists of the superintendants, catalogues, dates of building extensions, a bibliography of 100 works, and indexes of people and plants significant to the garden. A handsome work, inscribed by H. Veendorp on title, and with 9 signatures on front endpaper, presumably botanists associated with the university.
