Chiaroscuro woodcut, 1721, from three blocks in pale green-blue, pale brown and dark brown, monogrammed in silhouette in the block P. | AMZ (without date), mounted on off-white laid paper (no watermark) within gilt framing rule and gray-blue wash border within double brown ink rules. The woodcut 15.7 x 7.6 cm (6-3/16 x 3 in.), border 20.3 x 12.2 cm, sheet 34.5 x 26.5 cm. Guide pinpricks in sheet outside woodcut corners, minor original staining in wash border, sheet slightly toned at edges and negligibly light-struck within mat window, sheet hinged with tabs top verso, stub remnant along edge verso (album insert side), sheet slightly rippled on opposite (fore-edge) side, graphite stroke and almost imperceptible inscriptions on covered portion of sheet recto (St. Matteo lower right, other words at left), else both woodcut and sheet bright, unfaded and unblemished. Archivally mounted in a gilt frame 20-1/2 x 17 x 1-1/4 in. This example is one of three known before the date in the block, constituting the earliest known state of this chiaroscuro woodcut. Bartsch XII.164.7 (Vienna 1803) cites impressions dated 1722 in the block. Lorenzetti (1917) cites three impressions dated 1721, in Berlin (Staatliche Museen, Kupferstichkabinett), Bassano (Museo della Stampa Remondini) and Museo Correo, Venice. The Illustrated Bartsch 48.7-II (164) at p.276 (Karpinski ed. 1983) illustrates a Metropolitan Museum undescribed state with date 1721. Another copy dated 1721 is in the Royal Collection (in an album acquired by George III). None of the catalogues identify a state without the date in the block. The British Museum has such an impression without date (1851,0308.1067, printed in three tones of yellowish olive-green), and FAMSF/Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts recently acquired another such impression (2023.102.289, printed in two tones of rose-pink over bone-brown, with gray-blue wash border). The present impression, the third such known without date, may well excel the other two (and all the subsequent impressions with date) in clarity of printing. The color combinations in the early states of these chiaroscuro woodcuts may be unique to each impression. Attributes of the earliest state of the present print, of which this example is one, besides (i) the absence of a date in the block, include (ii) variations in the hair and beard of the Apostle, (iii) the delineation of the upper part of the halberd and its extension into the upper left-hand corner of the woodcut, and (iv) the subsequently covered weakness in the dark block lower left corner and the delineation of the foot of the halberd. Many variations doubtless derive from the chiaroscuro process in which individual examples display unique printing idiosyncrasies. For example, the indications on the present example of the hair to left of the Apostle's proper right ear and beard are clearer than in the British Museum impression and disappear in the Achenbach Foundation impression. In the 1730's Zanetti first compiled a selection of his chiaroscuro woodcuts, together with a frontispiece and other prints, as an album set entitled the Diversarum iconum - -. (The last edition of the album, re-titled Raccolta di varie stampe a chiaroscuro - -, is dated 1749.) The album mounts with gilt framing rule and washed border within ink rules are considered to have been designed, perhaps some also executed, by Zanetti. The present example, with its gray-blue wash border and remnant of an older stub on the insert edge, would be consistent with such an album set, copies of which have been broken over time for their individual prints.…
