Luc Vaubert, jésuite actif à la fin du XVIIe siècle, compose ce rare emblema dédié à François de Nesmond, évêque de Bayeux de 1670 à 1728, en l'honorant de la figure exemplaire de saint François Borgia (1510-1572), troisième général des Jésuites. L'ouvrage, anonyme et sans date ni lieu précis mais vraisemblablement parisien vers 1690, illustre la tradition jésuite des emblèmes spirituels, mêlant gravure et texte moral pour proposer un modèle de sainteté princière. Borgia, duc de Gandie converti après la mort de son épouse, incarne ici la renonciation mondaine au service de l'Église, dans le contexte de la Contre-Réforme française. La figure emblématique gravée représentant sa personnalité morale. Cette gravure placée en frontispice est l'oeuvre du peintre et graveur français Louis Cossin. Première édition.…
