Fobia exponía de forma cruda y visceral los terrores más abyectos del ser humano, aquellos con un origen primitivo y remoto, pero también los vinculados estrechamente a la vida moderna. Así, partiendo de la idea de que todas las fobias se expresan de una forma esencialmente gráfica en las mentes de las personas, Vassos se planteó ilustrar los miedos que acosan a la humanidad, rompiendo el tabú que muchos de estos trastornos mentales arrastraban y alertando sobre los peligros y excesos del american way of life. There are a multitude of tiny stains on the covers, that are probably the result of foxing. The gilt stamped title on the spine is rubbed. There is a bookseller's faint ink stamp on the front pastedown. There is a contemporary gift inscription on the front free endsheet, and the rear endsheet is darkened along the hinge. John Vassos was a 1930's book illustrator and long-term industrial designer. Among other projects, Vassos illustrated many of Oscar Wilde's literary works.
