Bound in traditional "fukuro-toji" binding (pouch-binding), and covered in full brocaded cloth, each with a unique floral pattern. Front boards have paper labels with gilt lettering. All boards have fraying and tears to extremities, soiling primarily to spines, denting to edges, and fading throughout. These volumes are ex-library books. Some boards have mild adhesive wear along the bottom joint, presumably from old library labels. All textblocks have library stamps and pencil marks to the copyright pages, library cards and pockets adhered to the rear pastedowns, several instances of light off-setting from plates, light age toning, and tears to the edges of some pages (not impacting text). Textblock of volumes 1-4, 6-10 have the bookplate of "Henry E. Treide" to the front pastedowns, and volume 5 has the same bookplate to the rear free end page. Volume 1 textblock has a large open tear to the page titled "Bronze Buddha at Kamakura" (not impacting text). Volume 2 textblock has a hole to the front free end page. Volume 10 has some pages that have been cut, presumably from a previous owner who did not know the folded pages were intentional. Shelved in Room F. "Japan: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese" was a multi-volume series of books published by the J. B. Millet Company between 1897 and 1898. The project was conceived by publisher Josiah Byram Millet, who secured financial backing from the Japanese government. The series is notable for its use of over a million hand-colored albumen prints, a more expensive and time-consuming process than the photomechanical methods common at the time. Although not credited, the photographs were supplied by the commercial photographer Tamamura Kozaburo, who reportedly hired more than 350 assistants to fulfill the large order. The text contributions from Japanese scholars were organized and translated by Captain Francis Brinkley. There were at least 16 different folio multi-volume editions released. 1403872.
