Illustrations, in keeping with the theme of the book, are of vegetation, in detail and as scenery. Sieck (1877-1957), a German, was primarily a landscape painter. This was the only one of the series that he illustrated. There is no common name in English for the Mauskäfer (Dermestes murinus), so called in Latin and German for its mouse-gray color. Why such an unappealing beetle was loved by the Gerlach designers is anybody's guess.…
