The pamphlet was first published in January 1941, and was reprinted regularly over the following months due to the large demand. ***A very good copy in thin printed p…aper covers. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling over the years, but are complete and undamaged. The spine has detached from the staples due to wear and tear over the past 85 years. Internally the pamphlet is also in very good condition, with unmarked pages. No inscriptions. No significant tears. No foxing. Pages clean. ***55 pages. 183mm x 124mm. ***'This is the full text of Sir Robert Vansittart's broadcasts on the German people, delivered in the B.B.C. Overseas Programme, and extensively quoted in the press. Sir Robert is Chief Diplomatic Adviser to the British Government, but in his introduction he describes himself as "a working diplomatist with his coat off."' --- 'these talks are designed to show that the German has not really altered since Tacitus' day.' --- 'His indictment is not merely propaganda: it is based upon wide scholarship, first-hand experience and the conviction of many years.; (Quote taken from the back cover) ***'Robert Gilbert Vansittart, 1st Baron Vansittart, GCB, GCMG, MVO, PC (25 June 1881 - 14 February 1957), known as Sir Robert Vansittart between 1929 and 1941, was a senior British diplomat in the period before and during the Second World War. He was Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister from 1928 to 1930 and Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office from 1930 to 1938 and later served as Chief Diplomatic Adviser to the British Government. He is best remembered for his opposition to appeasement and his strong stance against Germany both during and after the Second World War. His 1941 book, "Black Record: Germans Past and Present", led to the coining of the term Vansittartism, a doctrine holding that Germans were incorrigibly violent and militaristic throughout their history. Vansittart was also a published poet, novelist and playwright. "Black Record: Germans Past and Present was presented by Vansittart in a series of seven broadcasts by the BBC World Service. The book's central argument is the assertion that Nazi Germany represented a continuation, not an exception, of German history, which was, since at least the time of the 17th century Prussian kings, characterized by "training in militarism" that sought "inevitable expansion in Europe and then world-domination."
