An unusual volume in which a scarce crime novel by Derek Vane is preceded by thirty pages of advertisements for merchants in Taunton. Blanche Eaton Back produced over twenty novels under the pen name Derek Vane, and the present volume contains a copy of her uncommon crime novel, The Mystery of the Moat House. The novel is preceded by thirty pages of illustrated advertisements for a wide range of Taunton based merchants, including carpenters, boot repairers, and electrical engineers, along with hotels and restaurants. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the front wrap, 'J. Brooke'. Undated. Dated using JISC from a copy of the novel published by Cosmopolitan in the British Library. In the publisher's original red paperback binding. Externally, sound. Missing some wrap to the extremities of the front cover, and to the fore edge of the rear cover. Lightly bumped to the head of the spine. The front hinge is starting, and is a little tender. Internally, firmly bound. The advertisements to the front of the volume are bright, whilst the pages of the novel are lightly age-toned. Good. book.
