Originally distribution was limited to U.S. Government agencies and their contractors as critical technology. Given the passage of time and advances in technical information in the public domain, this limitation is understood to no longer apply. The authors were respectively with the Transmission Technology Branch of the Information Technology Division and the Microwave and Millimeter Wave Tube Technology Branch, Electronics Technology Division of the Naval Research Laboratory. The United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is the corporate research laboratory for the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. It conducts basic scientific research, applied research, technological development and prototyping. The laboratory's specialties include plasma physics, space physics, materials science, and tactical electronic warfare. NRL is one of the first US government scientific R&D laboratories, having opened in 1923 at the instigation of Thomas Edison, and is currently under the Office of Naval Research. The Naval Research Laboratory conducts a variety of basic and scientific research and technological development of importance to the Navy. It has a history of scientific breakthroughs and technological achievements dating back to its foundation in 1923. In some instances the laboratory's contributions to military technology have been declassified decades after those technologies have become widely adopted. This study assesses the state of the then current technology that could be applied to the development of high power EHF satellite terminals. Three basic areas in the construction of high EIRP EHF satellite terminals are examined. (1) High power transmitters, (2) high efficiency coupling, and (3) high gain antennas. The results of this study indicated the feasibility of transmitters providing over 150 kilowatts of EHF CW power based on emerging gyrotron technology combined with beam waveguide having antenna coupling losses as low as 1 dB.
