Bibliography. Index of Names. Hans Werner Neulen (born in 1948) is a lawyer and historian, and especially an author of articles on militar…y history. One of his more recent works is "In the Skies of Europe", translated from German by Alex Vanags-Baginskis. It is a story of the air forces allied to Germany and the foreign flying personnel of the Luftwaffe. In this work survivors from former communist countries such as Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, and Romania talk freely for the first time since the fall of the Iron Curtain about their pasts. Alex (Aleksandrs) Vanags-Baginskis was born in Riga, Latvia in 1927. In 1944 he volunteered to join the Latvian flying-training school in Luftwaffe service based in Courland, which prepared flying and ground personnel for the Latvian NSGr 12 night harassment group. Its most notable pilot was Lt. Teodors Abrams, credited with 229 operational sorties. Ten of its pilots were selected for fighter training on the Fw 190 two of which participated in Operation Bodenplatte on 1 January 1945, Lt. Mencis and Fw Klints, the only foreign pilots to do so. After World War II he escaped from Soviet captivity and emigrated to the United Kingdom. He studied military aviation history, specializing in the Luftwaffe. In 1967, he was hired as an Aviation and Military Editor by Macdonald & Jane's (later Jane's Information Group). During his employment there, Vanags-Baginskis collaborated with many well-known aviation and military authors. During the Second World War the air forces and pilots of the countries allied to Germany played a greater role than hitherto conceded by historians. In this book, Hans Werner Neulen has gathered an enormous amount of information on the air forces of eight countries and the various foreign airmen [including Russian] who fought with the Luftwaffe. Their operations, mostly carried out in conditions of numerical inferiority, their successes and failures, as well as the motivation of the aircrew and their often tragic fate are all incorporated into this comprehensive account.
