In 1932 was die Nasionale Party onder Hertzog nog stewig in die saal. Maar met droogte, armblanke-werkloosheid, finansiële onrus (en Tielman Roos) kom koalisie in 1933. Toe kom samesmelting van die NP en die SAP in 1934. En toe kom die groot breuk: aangespoor deur Geyer en Die Burger, skei Malan en sy "Gesuiwerde Nasionaliste" van Hertzog en die nuwe Verenigde Party, en begin die sware woestyntog na 26 Mei 1948. En tussendeur besluit Hertzog om die Nasionale Pers "dood te maak". Dis 'n geskiedenis van ambisies, renonse, intriges en teen-intriges, versluierings and misverstande en flaters, maar ook (by sommige) van kompromislose, nogal koppige integriteit.'.
