In den WarenkorbFirst edition of the book Smith College made for its centennial, a mosaic assembled out of one hundred and fifty interviews with its alumnae. From the library of Julia Child, who is one of the voices in it. Square octavo, original cloth. Julia Child was a chef, author, and television personality who is recognized for having brought French cuisine to the American public with her debut cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her subsequent television programs, the most notable of which was The French Chef, which premiered in 1963. She had graduated with the class of 1934, and she speaks here across pages 94 and 95, noting that her mother, Caro Weston of the class of 1900, was such an enthusiast that "the day I was born I was entered at Smith College," and going on, with the bluntness that made her famous, to say that she had majored in history because it left the most room to experiment, that she had spent most of her time at Smith growing up rather than working, and that she came only later to the conviction that an education carries an obligation to use it. Her interview was taken in 1974, when From the French Chef's Kitchen was still a year from publication, and the headnote to it records her honors to that date, among them the Peabody, the Emmy, the Ordre du MÃ rite Agricole and the Smith Medal. From the library of Julia and Paul Child. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Laid in is the Daily Hampshire Gazette's notice of the book's publication, dated May 29, 1975. College: A Smith Mosaic (1975) was published for the centennial of Smith College and grew out of the Smith Centennial Study Oral History Project, for which Jacqueline Van Voris spent three years recording interviews with alumnae across the country, from a member of the class of 1897 to members of the class of 1973, women who had become homemakers, lawyers, missionaries, bacteriologists, pilots and archaeologists. Four years in the making and supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities with matching funds from alumnae, the book distills more than six thousand pages of transcript into a two hundred page volume issued in an edition of five thousand copies, most of them destined for alumnae. The tapes and the full transcripts remain in the Smith College Archives. Among the familiar names are Julia Child, Betty Friedan, Nancy Reagan and Ada Comstock Notestein, the first full-time president of Radcliffe College, who was ninety-seven when she was interviewed. Van Voris, the wife of the Smith English professor William Van Voris, went on to write Carrie Chapman Catt: A Public Life, the biography of the suffrage leader published by the Feminist Press in 1987.…
