Cm 21.5x23.8. pp. 112. . Perfetto (Mint). . Prima edizione (First Edition). . Book.…

hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Prima edizione (First Edition). 32 fotografie a colori di Bertien Van Manen . Cm 29,5x26,5. pp. 60. . Ottimo (Fine). . Prima edizione (First Edition). . In questo nuovo corpus di lavori, Beyond Maps and Atlases, Bertien van Manen guarda all'Irlanda. From the introduction: "Through her excellent photographs and her inquiring and humanistic temperament, and with powerful artistic expression, Bertien van Manen shows what historians, writers, sociologists and political scientists argue, that there exist at least two Russias. There is the official, imperial and external Russia, known to us from newspaper headlines, and the one within, the hidden, poor Russia of the anonymous, ordinary people of whose existence Bertien van Manen's moving and revealing album tells.". Hardcover. 235 x 225 mm. 112 pages. 78 color plates. Text in english. Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! "Spanning almost three decades, Moonshine is a portrait of the American Appalachian folk, a mythologised region populated by `moonshiners`. Van Manen`s images are defined by a fierce intimacy with her subject, as the viewer teeters on the edge of the frame, perpetually trespassing on private moments: rollicking children practicing handstands on the couch; a kneeling daughter combing the hair of her grandmother. Van Manen first visited the region in 1985, to the Appalachian areas of Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, returning periodically up until 2013 to visit mining families with whom she lived: the Boggs family with their ten red-haired sons; miners Mavis and Junior. The intergenerational images subtly trace the insidious changes undergone by Appalachia - the slow and steady demise of the mining industry, and the migration of inhabitants from ramshackle wooden cabins to the city, or urban trailer parks. Van Manen intermixes black-and-white images with later colour work - another register of time passing and the inevitability of change. Bertien van Manen rolled into photography almost by accident, taking pictures of her children with an old camera. As her work became more public she was soon drafted into the world of fashion photography. In 1977 she tired of the industry, and on discovering the documentary photography of Robert Frank and Josef Koudelka, van Manen began to explore the developing relationship between herself and her subjects, keeping a closeness and developing a personal, organic style of photography." Van Manen says, `At first, working in Ireland I wasn`t sure what I was looking for. My husband had died. I dispensed with the people and reflected on the atmosphere. I was guided by a feeling and a search, a longing for some kind of meaning in a place of myths and legends. There was mystery and endlessness at the edge of a land beyond which is nothing but a vast expanse.` `Where can it be found again, an elswhere world, beyond. Maps and atlases, where all is woven into and of itself, like a nest. Of crosshatched grass blades?` (Seamus Heaney). Van Manen rolled into photography almost by accident, taking pictures of her children with an old camera. As her work became more public she was soon drafted into the world of fashion photography. In 1977 she tired of the industry, and on discovering the documentary photography of Robert Frank and Josef Koudelka, van Manen began to explore the developing relationship between herself and her subjects, keeping a closeness and developing a personal, organic style of photography. Recent works include Easter and Oak Trees (Mack, 2013) and Moonshine (Mack, 2014)." (from the publisher)***************Mack Books, London. 2014. Erstausgabe. Originalausgabe.
