Provenance: Griffin is Philip Griffin, the eighteenth-century Oxford poet of St. Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford, the author of Juvenile Poems on Several Occasions (Oxford: Printed for Daniel Prince, [1764]). He was later Rector of Runwell, then Rector of Warnford, being the incumbent at the latter till at least 1788.

Landwehr, Romeyn de Hooghe as book illustrator, 99 (hier in der Tafelanzahl variierend). VD17 23:230266S. Mit gestochenem allegorischem Titelblatt, 15 (von 22) Portraittafeln und 13 (von 36) doppelblattgroßen Tafeln. Das Werk ist "mit Radierungen von Romeijn de Hooghe zu den niederländischen Eroberungen illustriert. Die Porträts von Christian van der Hagen sind aus T. van Domselaar Het Ontroerde Nederlandt Amsterdam, 1674 übernommen." (Katalog Sammlung Angerhausen 141). Hier vorliegend die Ausgabe mit einfarbig schwarz gedrucktem Titelblatt ohne Verfasserangabe. Beginnend mit den Vorbereitungen des Kreuzzugs Ludwigs XIV. gegen die Niederlande bewegt sich das opulente Werk durch die Kriegsgeschichte bis in das Jahr 1674. "Very detailed and accurate account of the war between the Republic and France, and other nations. Interesting is one of the oldest accounts of the colony of Surinam where about 500 European settlers lived." (Landwehr ebd.). Einband am Rücken partiell etwas aufgehellt und insgesamt minimal berieben, Frontispiz fehlend, Seite 371/372 des ersten Teils fehlend, allegorisches Titelblatt mit stärkeren Randläsuren (äußerster Bildteil rundherum betroffen), montierte Papierschilder mit alten, mehrzeiligen Notizen in Tinte auf den Spiegeln, Tafeln und Seiten gebräunt, gering und blass stockfleckig und stellenweise etwas staubschmutzig sowie zum Teil mit Wasserrand (verschiedene Stärken, leicht nachgebräunt, meist nicht gewellt und, sofern überhaupt zutreffend, nur mit minimaler Textberührung), Seite 305/306 mit Eckausriss (ca. 4,5 x 6,5 cm, Verlust einiger Wörter), wenige Seiten in den Ecken etwas knickspurig oder mit kleinen Randeinrissen, die ersten Seiten und einige Tafel mit kleineren Randläsuren (ohne Bildverlust), eine Doppeltafel mit hinterlegtem Ausriss im Bundsteg (ca. 6 x 2 cm), Tafeln zum Teil oben etwas knapp beschnitten. Im Ganzen noch gutes und trotz der Mängel überzeugendes Exemplar. First German edition, published in the year of the Dutch original edition "Tooneel des Oorlogs". Modern half leather binding with three raised bands, blind embossed title on spine and renewed endpapers. With engraved allegorical title page, 15 (of 22) potraits on plates and 13 (of 36) double-paged plates by Romeijn de Hooghe and Christian van der Hagen. The edition at hand is the one with the one-coloured title page without author statement. Spine partially a bit brightened and binding minimally rubbed, frontispiece and page 371/372 of the first part missing, margins of allegorical title page with blemishes (outmoust part of the image affected), mounted paper labels on endpapers with old inscriptions in ink, plates and pages darkened, slightly and lightly foxed as well as partially a bit dust stained, some margins and corners with water stains (varying intensity, only lightly darkened, most not wavy and, if at all applicable, text only very slightly affected), page 305/306 with missing corner (ca. 4,5 x 6,5 cm, few words missing), few pages' corners with crease marks or margins with small tears, margins of first pages and some plates with blemishes (images not affected), one double-paged plate with backed defect (image affected, ca. 6 x 2 cm), some of the plates trimmed a bit narrowly in the upper margin. Altogether still good and despite of the shortcomings convincing copy.

The work is known for its rich decoration with engravings, including an allegorical title page by Romeyn de Hooghe and portraits of naval heroes by artists such as Jan Luyken.
