Derôme to the Times in its original form, not the less welcome was the glorified text which I found on my table yesterday on our return from a short visit to Brighton. That charming appeal acted as a mental Conserve alimentaire to me, when it first appeared, and it shall be placed with certain other valued opuscules, where I can offen turn it to the like account. Who can regert the "griefs" of a chef, who can turn out of them such an admirable plât à sa façon? He will rank henceforth in my Catalogue of worthies with Horace's Davus.-' He points him towards a paper he is publishing 'in the next Quarterly' on 'The Drama of England': 'I sat down intending to write a paper on Garrick's Contemporaries, - la Troupe de Garrigue - & Co, & ventured off in quite a different direction.' Sylvain Van de Weyer (1802-1874) était "Avocat, Conservateur de la Bibliothèque de Bruxelles et des Manuscrits su Roi, Professeur de Philosophie au Musée, membre de la Commission chargée de la publication des monuments inédits de l'histoire du pays, et l'un des rédacteurs du Courrier des Pays-Bas". Important homme politique, il fut membre du Gouvernement Provisoire de Belgique en 1830 et deviendra premier ministre libéral de 1845 à 1846 (Cabinet de la Parenthèse) ; il sera l'un des fondateurs de l'Université libre de Bruxelles. Il est également l'auteur de l'avant-propos au "Supplément" aux oeuvres de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. Bon exemplaire provenant de la bibliothèque du fameux bibliophile Gustave Mouravit (1840-1920), notaire à Aix-en-Provence (il fut le notaire de la famille de Cézanne) puis établi à Marseille, avec son petit cachet d'ex-libris à l'encre violette aux initiales G (à l'envers) et M. A Damaged square on base of spine where a sticker was removed. Binding tight and clean, but for minor edgewear and the one inch square. Marbled endpapers. Engraved bookplate on inside front cover with the coat of arms and name Sylvain Van de Weyer. He was Prime Minister of Belgium in the 1840s and Ambassador to England for more than 30 years. This copy also has red rubberstamps on the blank pages after the marbled endpaper with the name of Hagarstown Junior College Library, in Maryland. Rubberstamps are on both front and rear blanks, and library pocket and library sticker on rear endpaper. Library bar code sticked on rear cover. Luckily, these stamps are not on the original 1819 portion of the book, except for a large WITHDRAWN stamp on title page. This leather binding was added later, likely closer to 1900. Title page with engraving dated 1819. 47 pages, all with black border. Printed on both side of page. Text block all in very good condition. A 1819 reprint of 1606 original. Scarce.
