Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - At its height in the first half of the seventeenth century, the Dutch West India Company controlled a scattered but sizeable portion of the western hemisphere, from present-day Albany, New York, to northeast Brazil. In 1647, the Dutch historian, theologian, and philosopher Caspar van Baerle created…a landmark historical narrative, which he published in Latin. Now, after more than 350 years, the definitive record of the brief period when the Dutch ruled Brazil is available in English for the first time. Included are rare historical descriptions of relations with the native population, the indigenous flora and fauna, the workings of the sugar economy, attitudes toward private property and religious pluralism, global intrigue involving the Spanish and Portuguese, and the development of the slave trade. The original illustrations and maps from van Baerle's volume--a number of which are reproduced here--were used by Europeans well into the nineteenth century.

First edition in Latin of a beautifully illustrated Dutch Royal Entree book, with all of the plates in their first states. Published simultaneously in French and in Latin, it is the first official description of an entrance in the Northern Netherlands, a tradition which had flown over from the South. The ceremonial entry of Mari…e de' Medici (1575-1642) was an important moment in the history of Amsterdam. Although her presence was a politically sensitive issue, she was received with great honour. The present work, complete with all 17 engravings, is a beautiful visual and textual homage to this event. The work is especially known for its impressive plates, which are known to have had either two or three different states, depending on the plate. In the present copy, all plates are in their first state. This is easily recognisable by the lack of numbers and inscriptions at the very bottom of the plates, as well as by other details, such as the white background on the frontispiece portrait of Marie de' Medici, which shows a view of Amsterdam in later states, and the headless dog in the foreground of the final plate. Copies with plates in the first state are the most rare, as the plates were numbered to assist in managing the greater number of copies being produced. They are also usually larger than those with plates in later states, as is the case here. The beautiful plates were drawn and engraved by different artists. Nine were engraved after Claes Moeyaert (1592-1655), who designed the triumphal arch built for De' Medici's entry, as well as the dramatic tableaux based on her life that were shown to her. These 9 engravings depict these tableaux. The portrait of Marie de' Medici, is drawn after a painting by Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656). The remaining 7 plates, engraved by Salomon Savery (1594-1666), represent the festival in exceptional detail. The folding plate, for example, shows the hundreds of boats and ships in the IJ, with the city in the background. The other topographic plates show the old city hall (burned down in 1652) and weigh house (demolished in 1808) on the Dam, and the triumphal arches built for the occasion (1 on an artificial island). Some copies also include an extra plate of the four burgomasters of Amsterdam which is not present here, but according to Muller this plate was not orignally intended to be a part of the work, so copies without it are not incomplete.Marie de' Medici was the wife of King Henry IV (1553-1610). After he was murdered, she became the regent of France until her son, Louis XIII (1601-1643), came of age in 1614. However, she refused to resign and continued as regent until she was removed by a coup in 1617. She initially reconciled with her son, but lost his trust when she became part of a political conspiracy, and was forced to go into exile in 1631. She arrived in the Northern Netherlands in 1638, where her visit was seen as official recognition of the Dutch Republic (1579-1795). Because of this, she was welcomed in Amsterdam with spectacular displays, water pageants, a procession, and a series of dramatic tableaux in tribute to her. However, her presence caused political difficulties with France and she was encouraged to leave after a few months. She sailed to England in October 1638, and died a few years later in Cologne. The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed, the boards and spine are rubbed, the board are slightly dust soiled. The work is slightly foxed, with some leaves affected more than others. Otherwise in good condition.l Berlin Kat. 2949; Hollstein XIV, 86-94, and XXIV, 144 a-h (the plates); Muller, Historieprenten, 1793; L'Art Ancien, cat. 26, nr. 398; Landwehr, Splendid ceremonies, 108; Lipperheide 2665; Snoep, Praal en Propaganda, pp. 39-76; STCN 850281733; Verzameling Amsterdam W.J.R. The history of Dutch Brazil during governorship of John Maurice of Nassau, appointed in 1636; written by Caspar Barlaeus (1584-1648), a Dutch polymath and Renaissance humanist; originally published in Latin in 1647. The title page is followed by the author's dedicatory preface to John Maurice; the main text is followed by a gene…ral index. The copy features an engraved title and 7 double-page copperplates (most of them detached, never bound into the volume): vista of Brazilian landscape with coats of arms (facing p. 212), map of Dutch Brazil (p. 352), vista of the Palace of Friburgo (p. 418), map of Recife and its surroundings (p. 422); vista of Mauritsstad (p. 422), map of Brasil and Africa (p. 569), vista of Luanda, Angola (p. 569). These engravings of Brazilian northeastern locales, fleets and maps were for 160 years the main references to Brazilian landscapes available in Europe, and are well known by Brazilians today as the most important examples of pre-national art. Three plates are missing: John Maurice's portrait; his coat of arms; depiction of the battle near Porto Calvo (facing p. 111). Fraktur typeface; the title page contains the printer's device, other pages are decorated with two woodcut headpieces. /// Parchment binding with coloured edges; hardback, [22]+848+[20] pp., engraved title + 7 plates, 12° (10 x 16.5 cm), cover worn and rubbed, top edge darkened, starting hinge, spine cracked (text block still holds together), endpapers with a few bookworm traces, free front endpaper foxed and partly detached, some pages yellowed, several plates slightly creased along edge, with small tear(s) on fold, other signs of wear and age are rare (small water stain, minor pen underlining and marginalia, tiny chips and tears), condition: good Book Language/s: German.

Tanned, in places heavily, with some foxing principally to the verso of some plates. Wormed throughout, with inexpert repairs. Ink manuscript shelf-mark (?) to the title-page: "H.Li./2432" Altogether solid, but not without the scars of a long life. Johan Maurits (Maurice) of Orange, Count and eventually Prince of Nassau-Siegen (1604-1679), distinguished himself as a military commander on behalf of the Dutch West Indies company (WIC) in Brazil. He was governor-general from 1636-1644 (the octennium or eight-year span of the title) and fought almost constantly against the Spanish-Portuguese forces to defend and even to expand Dutch holdings in South America and, eventually, in Africa (in order to re-open the transport of enslaved people to the Americas). The Dutch would come to sell Brazil to the Portuguese in 1661, and so Maurits's governorship represents the high-water mark of their power in the Americas. Caspar van Baerle (latinized to Barlaeus; 1584-1648) was a versatile Dutch humanist and panegyricist; his Medicea Hospes of 1638 recounts the triumphant entry of Marie de' Medici, then Queen Mother of France, into Amsterdam. As early as 1622, his eye turned to the New World, translating Antonio de Herrera's Historia general de los hechos. que llaman Indias Occidentales into Latin. He was, therefore, the perfect candidate to write an encomium of Maurits, interwoven with accounts of the geography, history and natural life of Brazil. The genre of the "res gestae" -- the "deeds done" or accomplishments -- is most closely associated with the Emperor Augustus, comparison with whom Maurits would no doubt have enjoyed greatly. Barlaeus, with Maurits's own archives and, more importantly, financial support, enlisted the great minds of his day as collaborators. The images are, for the most part, the work of Frans Janszoon Post (1618-1680), the first European artist to paint the New World. Post was in Brazil at the same time as Maurits, and his images -- disseminated through these engravings, executed by Jan van Brosterhuisen and Salomon Savery -- defined Europe's vision of the exotic lands of South America. Georg Marcgraf, along with the publishers Willem and Joan Blaeu, contributed the maps. Eventually Marcgraf would issue the four sectional maps of Brazil into a large and influential wall-map. The work in its first edition is quite rare, although many sources (including Sabin and Rodrigues) cite Clement's Bibliotheca Curiosa II.430 attesting that a fire ravaged the warehouse of Blaeu and destroyed most copies of the work. The cataloguer is unable to locate such a book. The Blaeu warehouse fire was in 1672, 25 years after the present work came off the presses. Amstelodamensi præfuere tunc, cum eorum mandato advocatus Cornelius A Davelaer, D. in Petten, Equitatus Patritii Praefectus, christianissimam Reginam Mariam de Medicis, eandem urbem ingredientem, deduxit drawn by Thomas de Keijser and engraved by Jonas Suijderhoef (at B2). Bound in (later?) laced vellum over pasteboard. Title and author ink manuscript to the spine. All edges of the text-block speckled red. Some soiling generally, with bumps to the fore-corners. Quire A with some repairs and reinsertions (title-page backed with tissue?). Otherwise a clean copy with old guards and strong impressions of the plates. Ink-stamp and bookplate of Edward Ipers on the front paste-down, as well as the bookplate of Paul and Marianne Gourary. On the verso of the Effigies Mariæ de Medices ink notations of date ("3 July 1642" and "A.o 1638") and a partially-trimmed notation of location (". . . binnen Amsteldam"). Marie de' Medici (1575-1642) was many things. Born the daughter of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, she married Henry IV of France, and when widowed by him served as Queen Regent for their son, Louis XIII. Her regency was controversial, and in 1617 Louis XIII banished her from court, placing her under house-arrest at Blois. Though she eventually returned to court, she would in 1631 leave France permanently, and made a tour of European countries where she had allies or other children. The Queen Mother's entry to Amsterdam on 1 September 1638 was an occasion of great pomp and import -- most unusual for the Republic. Caspar van Baerle's account, published in Latin as well as in French and Dutch, details the magnificence and splendor of the celebrations: dramas and waterworks, triumphal arches and a vast parade (the title translates to "The Medicean Guest. . ."). The plates depict these preparations and spectacles in great detail (including several of an allegorical drama). Indeed, the two inserted plates give a sense of how the visit was commemorated. Likely published initially for the grandees involved in the reception of the Queen Mother, the first state of the plates is unnumbered. These copies were larger and printed more finely; later, numbers were added to assist in managing the greater number produced. The book came into the collection of Edward Ipers (1843-1912) a Dutch paper-merchant and himself a writer, principally on Dutch history and language. Somewhat later, it joined the pre-eminent collection of "fête books," as they are known (festival books, celebration books), amassed by Paul and Marianne Gourary. After Paul's death in 2007, the collection -- "Splendid Ceremonies" -- was sold by Christie's New York (12 June 2009), in which the present item was lot 4. The present work, complete with all 17 engravings and the extra burgomasters plate, is a beautiful visual and textual homage to this event. The work is especially known for its impressive plates, which are known to have had either two or three different states, depending on the plate. In the present copy, all plates are in their second state. This is easily recognisable by the lack of numbers at the very bottom of the plates, but the addition of the view of Amsterdam on the frontispiece portrait of Marie de' Medici, and the coats-of-arms at the top of the folding plate with the view of Amsterdam from the IJ. Copies with plates in early states are also usually larger than those with plates in later states. This is the case here, as the present copy is extremely large, with very ample margins. The very rare plate of the four burgomasters was engraved by I. Suyderhoef and is only present in a few copies. The vellum shows mild traces of use, with a few scratches, and a bumped upper corner on the back board. The first few leaves are slightly soiled in the margins, the first few leaves and pages 17-25 are slightly frayed. Otherwise in good condition.l Berlin Kat. 2950; Hollstein XIV, Nolpe 86-94, and XXIV, Saverij 144 a-h (the plates); Landwehr, Splendid ceremonies 109; Lipperheide 2665; Muller, Nederlandse historieplaten 1793 & supplement 1793; Snoep, Praal en propaganda, pp. 39-76; STCN 85007293X (11 copies); Vinet 489. The Metropolitan Museum of Art).
