VERY SCARCE. A complete copy. The more common text volume, is not present. The two ownership signatures are those of Major General Sir Thomas Hawker, later Lt Gen. Sir Thomas Hawker, 1777-1858 who served in India with the 20th Dragoon Guards to 1838 and from 1839 to 1858 as Colonel of the 6th Dragoon Guards. This is a clean copy and now professionally repaired with period paper strips,to the rear unprinted reverse side, although a little browning remains to the damaged paper edges. The maps into which the damage reaches the printed surface are no.s 30, 32, 33,34,35,37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43,and 44. the double maps have this damage to each leaf at the tail of the gutter. Damage to the printed surface measures between 0.5 and 1.0 cm.in depth and 0.5 cm in width. Loss of marginal paper is between 2.0 - 2.5cm in width. Blacker, the historian of the Mahratta Wars, served in the Madras Cavalry in 1798 and was a Cornet in the Mysore Campaign of 1799. He died in Calcutta in 1823 . First edition. Blacker's account of service with the Guides in Persia, Afghanistan, Transcaspia, Ferghana, and Sinkiang is rarely found in such sharp condition. "This is a tale of strange post-war happenings on the far frontiers of Persia and Turkestan which for high adventure and hairbreadth episodes would have delighted the heart of Charles Lever -whilst retaining all the advantage of historical accuracy. Told in the language of the modern British officer, which, if not classical, is at least picturesque and sometimes most expressive, it deals with the progress of a detachment of Guides projected into that amazing theatre of confused military and political action, after the Armistice, which we know as Central Asia" (Holdich, p. 247). This sentiment is echoed in Younghusband's introduction: "With the true Guides spirit [Blacker] started on a series of hazardous services which were prolonged over three years, and during which he and his patrol covered very nearly 10,000 miles on foot or on horseback During their patrol the Guides came into the vortex of wonderful exploits hidden from view by the absorbing events in the theatre of war nearer home. Of these none are greater than those of the 19th Punjabis and 28th Light Cavalry who defeated in battle some 10,000 Bolsheviks, and established the fear of God and of British-led Indian soldiers throughout several thousand square miles of Asia Those who wish to read an enthralling tale of endurance, courage, and adventure cannot do better than follow Captain Blacker and his gallant Guides on their secret patrol". After education at Sandhurst, Blacker (1887-1964) followed his father into the Indian Army but in 1914 transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was shot down and seriously wounded on several occasions. "After the war he decided to concentrate on developing special weapons at his own expense without help from the services" and during the Second World War "complete with eyeglass and leggings, approached everyone he knew at the War Office to do something about them" (ODNB). Perhaps the most important development of a Blacker brainwave was that highly successful anti-tank weapon, the PIAT. 4to. 27 cm, xxxiii, 494pp, with 2 large folding frontis views, 45 maps and plans (some double page, with colour accents), volume one: bound in early three quarter calf over marbled boards (with matching endpapers), gilt and blind ruled raised bands, crimson label, the front view is toned and has some staining, text block is toned, volume two: rebound in dark brown calf in period style binding with marbled boards, gilt ruled panels with extra gilt decoration in the panels, crimson label with gilt titles, plates are clean, a very good set. Lieutenant-Colonel Valentine Blacker served under Lieut.-General Sir Thomas Hislop with the army of the Deccan during the Mahratta War of 1817-1819, and in 1820, after being appointed the first Surveyor General of India, initiated the trigonometrical mapping survey of the continent. The frontispiece is a panorama "View of the Ground on which was fought Battle of Mehidpoor". Appendices include Order of Battle for the Army of the Deccan and extensive lists of casualties (killed & wounded). The Atlas accompanying the Memoir is a magnificent collection of maps and plans (many folding) with hand-coloured details. Colonel Blacker was the Quartermaster General of the Army of Fort George.
