Eventually, he succumbed to their appeal and made his earliest acquisitions. From this modest beginning, the Herzman collection today comprises a broad-ranging group of well over 100 objects spanning almost 2000 years of Chinese ceramic history. From the late 1940s until 1960, Mr. Herzman traveled regularly to the Far East for his import business. In 1960, he sold a major part of his company and began to manufacture Stateside. However, his interest in the Orient did not wane, and he continued to travel to the Far East with his wife, Gladys. In 1967, the U. S. Government sent him to Vietnam under the auspices of the Agency for International Development to help the South Vietnamese initiate cottage industries. Gladys Herzman died in 1975, and Mr. Herzman remarried in 1978. His new wife, Adele, an accomplished artist herself, encouraged her husband's determination to enrich and refine his collection of Chinese pottery. Soon after their marriage, the Herzmans began a program of periodically contributing some of these ceramics to museums in the New York area, Indianapolis, and elsewhere. In 1989, Adele and Stanley Herzman bequeathed a large portion of their collection of Chinese ceramics to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the same time, they gave the Museum a generous gift of funds for the reinstallation of its Chinese ceramic treasures. To celebrate these gifts, the Metropolitan organized an exhibition, A Selection of Chinese Ceramics from the Adele and Stanley Herzman Collection, which was shown in the Robert Wood Johnson, Jr., Recent Acquisitions Gallery from June 1 through August 26, 1990. About 100 works were on view; the earliest was produced during the Han dynasty (206 B.C.- A.D. 220), and the latest was made in the 19th century. It had originally been planned to return the collection to the Herzman residence after this exhibition. However, the showing was so well received that Mr. and Mrs. Herzman decided to continue to share their Chinese ceramics with the public. Accordingly, about sixty choice examples were installed in the bank of cases on the north side of the Metropolitan's Great Hall Balcony. Adele Herzman died in December 1990. Last year, in her memory, her husband gave a large group of Chinese ceramics that were part of the original promised bequest to the Metropolitan Museum. These ceramics, together with some of the material that was contributed to museums earlier, some of the objects that are promised to the Metropolitan, and others that remain in Stanley Herzman's collection, are the subject of this book." introduction by Suzanne G. Valenstein.

Good readable copy.; "This handbook has been prepared to complement the new installation, 'Chinese Ceramics through the Millennia' on the balcony of the Great Hall of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition, a survey of the development of the ceramic art in China from early to modern times, draws almost entirely upon the more than 4,500 examples of Chinese pottery in the Museum collection. Chinese ceramic history, which spans over seven thousand years, is sketched here to acquaint the visitor with the chronological background of the objects displayed. An understanding of the technology developed to create these wares is also central to an enjoyment of them and so is sum- marized here as well. Certain wares not represented in the Metropolitan collection are important links in the chain of Chinese ceramics, and a sampling of such pieces from other collections is shown in the text. The thread of tradition and innovation that winds through the entire history of Chinese ceramics is the overwhelming theme in the development of the Chinese potter's art and in this survey. Archeological discoveries made in recent years, some of which have made necessary a complete rewriting of particular aspects of Chinese ceramic history, are noted. Since 1949, an enormous amount of archeological activity has taken place in China, and I have no doubt that in the next few decades excavations will provide even more important material for art historians. Some more recent or less well- known references have been provided in footnotes for those who wish to pursue a given subject in more detail." excerpt from the preface by Suzanne G. Valenstein, Febraury, 1975.
