This work presents Christopher Marlowe's 1598 rendering of the romantic mythological legend of Hero and Leander with the contemporary continuation of the poet and translator George Chapman. This edition was one of three productions by Ricketts and Shannon done "at the Vale", the name of their Chelsea home, before the official establishment of the Vale Press in 1896. Ransom 434. Octavo. Full-page woodcut title page, woodcut vignettes and initials all by Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon. Original full vellum, spine lettered in gilt, decoration palm motif designed by Ricketts to spine and covers in gilt, edges untrimmed. Housed in a custom black cloth chemise and slipcase. Brooklyn Public Library copy, their bookplates to pastedown and stamps to title page. Spine a touch rubbed, short split to head of front inner hinge, sporadically foxed. A very good copy.
