Of beter: hoe de lage adel zijn vermaakscultuur aan de buitenwereld toonde. Het verhaal is opgebouwd met als leidraad de leventrap, in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw een bekend beeld voor het menselijk leven. De treden van de trap staan voor de levensfasen. Elke fase kent haar eigen vormen van feest en ontspanning: de geboorte, de jeugdjaren met de bijbehorende kinderspelen en amoureuze taferelen, het huwelijk, de feestende en zich ontspannende volwassenen (jacht, feestmaaltijden en -versieringen, schermen, paardrijden,.), het afscheid van het leven. Het boek eindigt met beelden van de begrafenis van Maria-Anna van den Tympel in 1658, de Leuvense adelijke dame die het kasteel van Horst byzonder smaakvol verfraaide. Omdat het kasteeldomein als het ware deelnam aan allerlei feestelijkheden en vormen van vermaak, krijgt ook de wisselwerking tussen het architecturale monument en de ontspanningscultuur hier alle aandacht.
