Thinker, Thought and Knowledge critically and analytically reasons that some of the philosophical expositions like "thought has created the thinker" and "higher-order thoughts are themselves conscious" hinder us from explaining our sense of unity of consciousness. This book presents and elucidates some observations - thought cannot create thinker; along with thinker and thought, thinking too is quintessential for individual experience to take place; thinker, thinking and thought are fundamentally one in self-consciousness; thought becomes the object of self-consciousness; and the modern science attempts to undermine the principle of causation - from the East - West perspective, and registers its disproval with the philosophical views of scholars like J. Krishnamurti and a few other modern philosophers. Coming to the knowledge aspect, the volume delineates the relative existence and knowledge dealing with the absolute reality and discusses it on the basis of Advaita Vedanta and the Yogacara Vijiianavada of the Buddhist philosophy along with Immanuel Kant's theory of knowledge. The researcher's approach employed in this volume should help the students of philosophy and other discerning readers take an analytical and critical positioning towards many a philosophical problem that they come across.

Scientific Views and Indian Philosophy: Matter and Consciousness. 3. Cid-atman in Advaita Vedanta. 4. Advaita Vedanta: Three States of Consciousness. 5. Citta-Caitasika, Bhavaṅga-Citta and Non-dual Consciousness of Buddhist Philosophy. 6. Alaya-vijnana of Yogacara Vijnanavada of Buddhist Philosophy. 7. Perception and Self-consciousness in Yogacara Vijnanavada of Buddhist Philosophy. Epilogue. Bibliography. Word Index. Name and Title Index. The synthesis between Vedanta and Buddhist philosophy has been attempted in this study on the ground that the former is the philosophy of "being", whereas the latter happens to be the philosophy of becoming. The being and becoming, both are important for proper understanding of the Absolute Reality and its manifestation. In synthesizing, it has concentrated on consciousness because of two reasons: (i) in consciousness, both being and becoming are involved and (ii) pure consciousness happens to be the essence of human nature. In Buddhist philosophy the concepts like citta-nirvana, bhavanga-citta and alaya-vijnana having a bearing on pure consciousness, which happens to be the Upanisadic atman and the Vedantic Brahman. Since these concepts represent the essence of human beings, the similarities among the Upanisads, Vedanta and Buddhism have been established. However, the differences between Vedanta and Buddhist philosophy (Yogacara Vijnanavada) on several issues like momentariness, changing reality will continue because these are merely modes of manifestations or appearances. It has also been shown that the concepts like One and Many, Time and Space of Buddhist philosophy and Vedanta have scientific support. Time and Space have no independent existence in Buddhist philosophy and Vedanta. In fact, both being the manifestations of consciousness, become the objects of consciousness. It means that Buddhist philosophy and Vedanta have treated Time and Space in relative framework. So is the case with science.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. Introduction.1. Explanatory gap in phenomenal consciousness: solution in east-west perspective. 2. Mind and consciousness in east-west perspective. 3. Consciousness in Advaita Vedanta. 4. Consciousness in Jean-Paul Sartre's philosophy of existentialism. 5. Intentionality in eastwest perspective. 6. Solutions to mind-body problem in east-west perspective. 7. Mental causation and inner sense in eastwest perspective. Epilogue. Bibliography. Index. The problem of explanatory gap in the phenomenal consciousness has risen in the Western philosophy mainly because the consciousness itself and its manifestations or reflections are treated separately. Whereas, according to the Vedanta school of India, the phenomenal consciousness is merely manifestations of self-consciousness which is embodied in the human beings. In this approach, the phenomenal consciousness and self-consciousness are one and the same thing because the former depends upon the latter. Hence, there is no explanatory gap in the phenomenal consciousness. Similar is the case with the mindbody problem which exists in the Western philosophy mainly because the mind is treated as synonymous with consciousness. This book solves the above problems on the basis of the Indian philosophy and existential philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre. In both the philosophies, there is no explanatory gap in the phenomenal consciousness and the mind-body problem.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: Preface. Introduction. 1. Are Particles Conscious? 2. Space and Time. 3. Thought as the Source of Nature and Quantum Physics. 4. Substantiality and Causality. 5. Continuity. Epilogue. Bibliography. Index. The book elucidates scientifically and philosophically the beginning of the evolutionary universe (brahmanda) and the intellectual growth of self-conscious human being (pinda), the former is "out" there and the latter is "out" here. Without the latter, the former is difficult to be perceived or known. Going by the scientific cosmology, this universe came into form about 14-13.7 billion years ago as a result of Big Bang and has undergone perpetual changes including life on earth some 3.9 billion years ago. Man's self-conscious evolution is driven by his intellectual growth and philosophical wisdom. It has been studied both from the Indian and Western philosophic perspectives. The philosophical wisdom in this regard is in sync with many modern scientific concepts. The SamkhyaYoga philosophy is embodied with the concepts of sattva, rajas and tamas. These three are in a sense comparable to the proton, the electron and the neutron of modern science. The proton provides the coalescence or the form of the atom; the electron gives us energy and proton provides the mass. Some other Indian philosophical systems like Vaisesika, Advaita Vedanta and Bauddha are replete with similar scientific approaches. So also are the studies of Western philosophers like Immanuel Kant, David Hume, Niels Bohr and David Bohm. All the things are happening within the time and space.

Problem of Knowledge and Perception in Advaita Vedanta. Part III: Nirvana. 8. Concept of Nirvana in Buddhism. 9. Liberation (Moksha) in Advaita Vedanta. Bibliography. Index. A unifying vision between Samsara and Nirvana has been presented in this study by placing human beings at the centre of the universe. Once this is accepted, the role of God turns to be nothing. This fact is not acceptable to most of the schools of Indian philosophy because of their strong faith in Brahman (God) as the creator of the universe. In that, this study raises the fundamental question. Why Brahman, being the creator, sustainer and dissolver of the universe, has taken such a long time of more than three billion years after the solar system to provide the conditions for the evolution of human life? Since the first cause of universe is the most difficult question, it is suggested to see the creator on the creation itself. An inference has been drawn that the action (karma) of human beings cannot be treated as ignorance, once it is accepted that human beings are at the centre of the universe. We human beings have nothing else except the freedom of action (karma). In fact, karma itself is freedom. This volume, in a way, an offshoot of the author's earlier work, Science of Consciousness draws the inferences based on the different systems of Indian philosophy and the philosophy of the West.

Evolution of society and culture. Appendices. Bibliography. Index. The name Rajasthan evokes many images of Rajputs tall handsome men wearing colourful turbans beautiful women unmatched valour and chivalry warm hospitality reverence for life impressive forts and palaces varied wildlife and rich traditions of music song and dance. The society of the state is composed of a large number of Hindu castes and several tribes a few of which still live at least partially a nomadic hunting gathering way of life. The present complex and culturally rich society is a product of adaptation to changing environment over a long period of time. Multidisciplinary research shows that the presently arid Thar Desert enjoyed good rainfall and had a network of perennial rivers during the Pleistocene. Stone tool using nomadic hunting gatherers had begun to colonize the region from about half a million years ago. Because of climatic change and shifting a drainage the land to the west of the Aravallis started turning into a sandy desert from about two lakh years ago. Sediments deposited by water and wind their weathering through time and the presence of archaeological material tell us the story of the fluctuating climatic history and evolving cultures of the region. Around 7000 years ago Mesolithic hunter gatherers had begun domestication of cattle goats and sheep. Settled village life based on agriculture and copper and stone technology appeared in the Banas basin in Mewar from ca. 5000 years. In the eastern part of the state new agriculture based villages using iron technology appeared around 3000 years ago and towns cities and political states from 400 BC onwards. In the arid and semi arid Western Rajasthan human groups continued to live by hunting gathering until almost early medieval period except along the perennially flowing Saraswati (Present day dry Ghaggar) river where farming based villages and towns belonging to the Indus/Harappan civilization appeared around 5000 years ago and were abandoned after 2000 BC due to the desiccation of the river. This book documents the long history of nomadic hunting gathering way of life during the stone age emergence of agriculture based villages during the Chalcolithic period and of towns and cities during the Bronze Age expansion of settled life and emergence of new urban centers and political states after the advent of iron incorporation of hunter gatherers and foreign invaders into the Hindu caste system and the survival of hunter gatherers into the present that has produced the economically and culturally vibrant present society of Rajasthan. 442 pp.

The present volume tries to evaluate the cultural and environmental factors, which necessitated a transition from hunting-gathering to food-producing stage; and the material culture, technology, subsistence, art, religious beliefs, disposal of the dead, biological composition, dietary habits, pathology and social organization of the then inhabitants, drawing data from the excavated finds, ethnography and author's own understanding of this phase for the last five decades. Evidence for the Mesolithic period in India, which now has a duration of over forty millennia, is much richer than for the preceding Palaeolithic period which lasted nearly from 1.0 to 1.5 million years. In this transition period, microlithic and composite tools took the centre stage resulting in an improved economy and sedentary lifestyle and laying the foundation for a settled agricultural life. The book discusses the origin and evolution of the Mesolithic culture with its chronological details.
