A striking group of three original Second World War U.S. Army Map Service maps at 1:1,000,000 scale covering southern Sakhalin/Karafuto and the Kuril Islands, comprising Otomari NL 54, AMS 2; Etorofu-Jima NL 55, AMS 3; and Shimushiru-To NL 56,AMS 2, sheet sizes respectively 60.4… × 66 cm, 56 × 66 cm and 56.2 × 66 cm. Produced under the direction of the Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army as part of AMS Series 5301, the wartime Eastern Asia 1:1,000,000 mapping programme, the sheets are attractively printed with blue seas and bathymetric contours, coloured altitude tints, settlements, transport routes, anchorages, submarine cables and navigational information. Together they trace the strategically important island arc from Hokkaido and Japanese Karafuto through Etorofu and the Kuril chain. Etorofu has exceptional wartime significance as the island from which the Japanese carrier striking force departed Hitokappu Bay on 26 November 1941 for the attack on Pearl Harbor, as recorded in contemporary Japanese operational orders. The precise NL-55 Etorofu-Jima 1944 sheet is independently recorded institutionally, while the AMS 5301 series index confirms Otomari NL 54, Etorofu-Jima NL 55 and Shimushiru-To NL 56 as consecutive sheets within the series. The maps also predate by only months the Soviet invasion and occupation of South Sakhalin and the Kurils in August 1945, which permanently transformed the political geography depicted here. Former institutional/library copies retaining pencilled or inked shelf marks and large blue "S" markings in the margins; the originating institution has not been identified. Good to very good condition overall, with original folds, handling and creasing, light age-toning, occasional marginal staining and localised wear but complete, vivid and strongly legible throughout.

Prepared by the US Army Corps of Engineers Army Map Service 1968, boundaries revised by Survey Production Centre, Royal Engineers (SPC.RE) in 1969, and published by D Surv…ey in the same year. Centred on the Red Sea, coverage is about equally divided between UAR Egypt and Sudan, and Saudi Arabia. Features include various sizes of settlement, grades of road and track, rail, major and minor airports, mines, forts, extensive drainage and arid features, with notes about terrain in the image. The Egypt-Sudan side is bounded by the Red Sea coast from the entrance to the Gulf of Suez to Guadiloab, with the Sahara divided by the Nile into Western, Eastern, Libyan and Nubian Deserts. This edition is contemporary with imminent completion of the New Aswan High Dam, shown here including Lake Nasser with the old course of the Nile traced through it. Other points of interest include several Pharaonic locations along the Nile, Kharga Oasis, and ancient caravan routes including the Darb El Arabain, Darb El Tawil, and Darb El Harrak. The Saudi side covers the Red Sea coast from the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba to Lith, thus including both Mecca and Medina and their associated ports, extending inland as far as Hail (NE).

Each approx 85x100cm, adapted from Aramco-USGS originals. All stated first editions, first printings dated Feb 1964 (Edition 1-AMS). Good overall. Neatly folded with…pinholes to some corners and edges, some wear along folds, occasional small areas of staining, and the original USGS map numbers in ms to the edges. The originals were prepared as part of the groundbreaking USGS-Aramco mapping exercise for the Saudi Government during 1956-63. One of its main products was a series of Geographic maps divided into 21 Quadrangles on a 1/500K scale, numbered I-200B to I-220B. These along with their geological equivalents were designed to support exploration and exploitation of petroleum, minerals, and groundwater. Evidenced by this set, the Geographic series also proved highly valuable to the US Army's Corps of Engineers, which was supporting Saudi Arabia through a massive long-term construction and infrastructure development programme. The AMS additions include a Universal Transverse Mercator grid, and marginal data revised to 1963. The maps are labelled in English and Arabic, including a Glossary, sources of base compilation, and Index Map. Details include international boundaries (where they exist), settlements of various sizes (including ruins, date gardens, and cultivated areas); transport (rail and stations, types of road and camel tracks, landing fields and airports). Hydrogaphic features include wells, wadis etc. Hypsographic features include descriptions of different types of sand terrain. Miscellaneous features include oil and gas installations. The sheets adjoin in 2 rows of 2, between them covering the area bounded by Safaniyah (NW), Gezdan (NE), Uruq (SE), and Al Arawik (SW), taking in all of Qatar and Bahrain, parts of Saudi Arabia and Iran, and parts of what would become the UAE. SHEETS: (1) NG 39-W: Western Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar. Copied from Map I-208B originally prepared in 1958 by a joint Aramco-USGS team including Max Steineke, TF Harriss, KR Parsons, and EL Berg. This covers the Gulf coast from Safaniyah to the western half of Qatar, including all of Bahrain, and the key Aramco locations including Al Khobar, Dhahran, Dammam, Jubail, Ras Tanura, Abqaiq, etc. Installations include the Trans-Arabian Pipeline with Tapline Road and the Al Qatif-Al Qaysumah Pipeline that feeds into it, with the Saudi Government Railroad to the lower edge. Among significant local sites are the port of Uqair, Hofuf Oasis, and the Darb Al Uqayr connecting them, and other ancient camel trails including Darb Huwwijan, Darb Mazalij, Darb Mikhyat, and Darb Az Zuayyini. First printing of a monumental and important lunar relief map… produced by the US Army Map Service in the run-up to the Apollo program, incorporating all six future landing sites. Rare in commerce, with no other copies in auction records. Mare Nectaris - Mare Imbrium was compiled during 1961, the same year that Kennedy famously announced to Congress that the US would land a man on the Moon. It was the first Earthside stereographic map of any part of the Moon, highlighting the central portion of the visible half of the lunar surface, and was based on photographs taken by the Paris Observatory between 1896 and 1907. The map was available in two versions: gradient tint and shaded relief, as here (Surveying and Mapping, United States Superintendent of Documents, 1963). The names of the features were derived from the standard source Named Lunar Formations by Mary Blagg and K. Müller, and the verso is printed with a complete list of lunar places. A small, three-dimensional plastic version at 1:500,000 was produced the year before, and is somewhat more available. The Apollo sites (not yet designated as such at the time of printing) are the Sea of Tranquility, the Sea of Storms (Oceanus Procellarum) near Lansberg Crater, Fra Mauro near the Bonpland and Perry craters, the Appenine Mountains near Haldey Rille, the Descartes Crater, and the Taurus Mountains-Littrow Crater area.
