Disbound from a larger volume, protected in a plastic sleeve, side-stitched threads showing, and remarkably crisp and bright appearance, with light but uniform toning and scattered foxing. Super-fine black-and-white steel engraving to first page, depicting St. John's Gate where operated the publisher. Table of contents, then a biography of Edvardus Cave (Edward Cave), ob. 10 Jan. 1754, engraving of him by F. Kyte from 1740, full-page and quite fine, showing him holding perhaps a submission to the publisher. Then come scattered notes and news including of weather observations, another black-and-white engraving ("Pan and His Symbols"), an engraved fold-out architectural drawing (perhaps of St. John's Gate), another engraving of a newfangled contraption, the "Rush-light Larum," which is designed to be an automatic form of "turning out the light," i.e., extinguishing a burning candle, a short course of how to raise mushrooms, the interpretation of newly found stone inscriptions, how to increase tree-strength and production, newfangled linguistic paradoxes of speech, newly invented block-and-tackle, astronomical charts, new books and prices, stock prices, and so on.
