Early treatise on Arab horses with several early important pedigrees preserved. Upton, a Captain in the Royal Lancers, saw the superiority of Arab horses during the Crimean War and was tasked by Henry Chaplin, later President of the Board of Agriculture, to go to the British Consul in Aleppo to aid in the acquisition of Arab horses, which he did twice between 1870 and 1875.

His book describes both the i…nfluence of the Arabian horse on the development of the English thoroughbred as well as many interesting aspects of the Arabian horse. Shortly after the publication of this work - intended to "point out errors that have been committed in the breeding of our horse" (p. iii) - he travelled in Arabia to obtain purebred horses and so improve the quality of British cavalry remounts. Upton served with the 9th Lancers. - Binding somewhat bumped and rubbed with traces of moisture to covers.
