He wrote, in the nineteenth century, to 'encourage deeper insight into the history of the horse in this country and in particular the thoroughbred. A great champion of the Arabian horse, he examines its history, defends it from its detractors, and strongly urges that the then degenerate English stock, as he saw it, be re-founded on a pure Arabian bloodline. In his conclusion he outlined radical plans for a national stud to regenerate the English horse, to the advantage of racers, hunters and cavalrymen. This impassioned work will be of great interest to horse-lovers everywhere.…

Original burnt red cloth binding with giltstamped title to spine and upper cover. First edition. Upton was one of the early experts on the bloodlines of British thoroughbreds. His book describes both the influence of the Arabian horse on the development of the English thoroughbred as well as many interesting aspects of the Arabian horse. Shortly after the publication of this work - intended to "point out errors that have been committed in the breeding of our horse" (p. iii) - he travelled in Arabia to obtain purebred horses and so improve the quality of British cavalry remounts. Upton served with the 9th Lancers. - Binding somewhat bumped and rubbed with traces of moisture to covers.
