Boards are a little dirtied. Spine cloth lightly rubbed, and slightly faded. Inside, the book is very clean and tidy. The Golliwogg began as a toy character and was later widely made into dolls and other merchandise. It originated in Florence K. With two inscriptions to the first free endpaper, one dated Christmas 1896 and the other in a more recent blue ink. The first of the dutch doll books, this title contains the first appearance of a "Golliwog" doll in a picture book. Apparently based on a black minstrel doll Upton had loved as a child, the character now considered a racist caricature was hugely popular in England at the time of publication and led to the widespread manufacture of the Golliwog dolls.
