Page15/16 badly torn and frayed, 2,1" tears to lower margin of 2 leaves.the above leaf now neatly and professionally repaired.Light soiling to margin of some leaves. With all the 31 wonderful ,bold colour plates present. Collates thus: 64,[2]pp. SCARCE Further forecsic notes : No front fly leaf as issued. Title page frayed at fore edge margin and lower margin to a depth of 0.5 cm. and with a 2cm tear to the lower edge margin. Both inner end paper joints are broken but the loose stitching is holding the text block in place. Unsightly tear to fore edge margin of p. 15/16, (text at p. 15, image at p. 16) and a 12cm long by 5 cm deep tear to the top edge of this leaf which has been strengthened. This leaf also has a loss of 2cm x 1cm to the top corner. Strangely, no other leaf is damaged apart from the above, although there is a 3 cm tear to the lower edge margin of p. 49/50.This just touches the image. This copy is a clean one, apart from a small, faint mark to 2pp of the text.The rear board is slightly scatched an dust marked but the case is sound. Instance of japanese paper repair to a small tear to edge of page. Tanning to page edges but otherwise clean and binding sound. Good. A nice example.

The Golliwogg began as a toy characte…r and was later widely made into dolls and other merchandise. It originated in Florence K. Upton's 1895 children's book The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg, and then spread into popular culture as a children's soft toy. 220 x 285 mm (8¾ by 11¼ inches). .

Apparently based on a black minstrel doll Upton had loved as a child, the character now considered a racist caricature was hugely popular in England at the time of publication and led to the widespread manufacture of the Golliwog dolls. This secondry printing of The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls was re-titled The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a "Golliwog" due to the popularity of the character. 8vo. Upton, Florence K.
