Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Poor. Robert Riger (Jacket photograph) (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. The format is approximately 5.5 inches b 8.25 inches. 188, [4] pages. Illustrations. DJ is heavily worn, torn, soiled and chipped. John Constantine Unitas (May 7, 1933 - September 11, 2002) was an American football quarterback who played 18 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), primarily with the Baltimore Colts. Following a career that spanned from 1956 to 1973, he has been listed as one of the greatest NFL players of all time. Unitas played college football for the Louisville Cardinals. He set many NFL records and was named Most Valuable Player three times in 1959, 1964, and 1967, in addition to receiving 10 Pro Bowl and five first-team All-Pro honors. He helped lead the Colts to four championship titles; three in the pre-merger era in 1958, 1959, and 1968, and one in the Super Bowl era in Super Bowl V. His first championship victory is regarded as one of the league's greatest games and is credited with helping popularize the NFL. Between 1956 and 1960, he set the record for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass at 47, which held for 52 years. Nicknamed "Johnny U" and "the Golden Arm", Unitas was considered the prototype of the modern era marquee quarterback. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979. Edward Earl Fitzgerald (September 10, 1919 - February 11, 2001) was a sports journalist, and editor of Sport magazine. He helped Yogi Berra write Berra's autobiography. He also co-wrote with tennis player Althea Gibson, sportscaster Mel Allen, and football player Johnny Unitas on their autobiographies. Pro Quarterback is Johnny Unitas talking about his life in football. It is a wonderful blend of the personal story of a fabulous sports figure together with his own perceptive analysis of football strategy and execution. It is a toss-up whether the reader will be more keenly interested in the gossip of the training camp and the men Unitas has known so well (Raymond Berry, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Big Daddy Lipscomb, Alan Ameche and so forth), or in the countermeasures he employs when the opposing line is trying to 'red dog' or 'blitz' him. On the other hand, it's the fascinating saga of how Unitas never mad it to his first college choice, Notre Dame (he was considered too small), went instead to the University of Louisville and then tried hard to break into the professional game with Paul Brown and the Cleveland Browns, and finally, when he had all but given up, suddenly got the most unexpected of calls from the Baltimore Colts, asking him if he'd be interested in trying out with them (he's never been anywhere else since). Many readers may be even more intrigued with Unitas' breathtaking description of just what went on in his mind, plat by play, as he guided the Colts to victory over the New York Giants in what has been called the most dramatic game ever played, the "sudden-death" playoff o 1958.
