The Union Carbide corporation succeeded Tennessee Eastman as the operating contractor in 1947, remaining until 1984, when Union Carbide relinquished the contract for operating DOE's Oak Ridge facilities, and the Martin Marietta corporation (later Lockheed Martin) won the contract to take over the operation. Non-mandatory ZIP codes were introduced to the United States in 1963. Therefore, by this data point, this folder dates from between 1963 and 1984. However, the date range can be narrowed even further. The Atomic Energy Commission was folded into the Energy Research and Development Administration in 1975, meaning that this folder was produced between 1963 and 1975. A small, unshielded and uncooled fast reactor, the HPRR was designed as a versatile tool for research in health physics and related fields. The core is a right, circular cylinder (8 in. in diameter and 9 in. high) of enriched uranium (93.14 per cent 235U) alloyed with 10 per cent by weight of molybdenum. Steady-state power levels range from 0.1 W or less to 10 kW, and the pulse mode yields pulses in the range of 1016-1017 fissions per pulse. For a pulse of 1017 fissions, the pulse width at half maximum pulse height is about 60 sec. The fast neutron to gamma ray dose ratio at distances up to several m is approximately 10. Dose rates for a fixed geometry may be varied by 12 orders of magnitude; the fast neutron dose rate at 1 m from the center of the core is approximately 3.3 tissue rad per hr/W. This report was issued on December 8, 1972, a week before the visit and can be assumed to be both a planning document and part of the foreign visitor security planning. Nobuhiko Ushiba (16 November 1909-31 December 1984) was a Japanese diplomat who served as Ambassador to Canada from 1961 to 1964, Ambassador to the United States from 1970 to 1973, and as Minister of State for External Economic Affairs from 1977 to 1979. The last was a position in the Cabinet of Japan. He received an appointment as first secretary at the Japanese Embassy in Berlin, and served there until the end of World War II (with a brief stint in the Japanese embassy in London just prior to the war). He was very close to General Hiroshi shima, Japan's ambassador to Nazi Germany. By at least 1939, he was helping to run a "bureaucratic intelligence service" which spied on Nazi Germany for the Japanese government. This document provides a step by step discussion of the visit itinerary with illustrations of major items to be seen. K-25 was the codename given by the Manhattan Project to the program to produce enriched uranium for atomic bombs using the gaseous diffusion method. Originally the codename for the product, over time it came to refer to the project, the production facility located at the Clinton Engineer Works in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the main gaseous diffusion building, and ultimately the site. When it was built in 1944, the four-story K-25 gaseous diffusion plant was the world's largest building, comprising over 1,640,000 square feet of floor space and a volume of 97,500,000 cubic feet. Gaseous diffusion is based on Graham's law, which states that the rate of effusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its molecular mass. The highly corrosive uranium hexafluoride (UF 6) was the only known compound of uranium sufficiently volatile to be used in this process. Before this could be done, the Special Alloyed Materials (SAM) Laboratories at Columbia University and the Kellex Corporation had to overcome formidable difficulties to develop a suitable barrier.…

This booklet presents information on the Sol-Gel Process Exhibit which was to show the process steps required for preparing, by the Sol-Gel Process, thorium-based nuclear fuels suitable for both water-cooled and gas-cooled reactors. The process is shown in flowsheet form, with operating displays included to show how to process steps are accomplished. This brochure describes the various process steps and engineering facilities shown on the exhibit. The exhibit was prepared of the Office of Organization for International Conference, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, for the Third United Nations Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy. The sol-gel process, developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, provides a stable colloidal suspension of various ceramic materials. This suspension, or sol, may be concentrated, dried, and fired at low temperatures to form dense ceramic bodies. They use standard ceramic equipment and the concentrated sol, or clay, with powder additions to extrude pure oxide ceramic bodies of various shapes and controlled density. The extrusion blend requires no extraneous binders or plasticizers. They have demonstrated in laboratory-scale work that this process produces high-strength solid and cored extrusions of thoria fired at 1150°C with controlled densities ranging from 70 to 99% of theoretical and with diameters up to l/2 in. (±0.001 in.) and lengths to 3 in. They have defined the effects of various powder additions and drying conditions on extrusion quality and density. This process, proven in the thoria system, may make improvement and greater economy possible in the fabrication technology for ceramic shapes of zirconia, alumina, and other ceramics amenable to the sol-gel process.…
