Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Akzeptanz des Wohlfahrtsstaates in Deutschland und ist das Ergebnis eines umfangreichen Forschungsprojekts, das von 2002 bis 2005 an der Universität Mannheim geleitet wurde. Das vorliegende Buch ist eine geringfügig überarbeitete Fassung der Habilitationsschrift, die im Juni 2006 angenommen wurde. Die Realisierung des Projekts wäre ohne die Unterstützung vieler Kolleginnen und Kollegen nicht möglich gewesen. Besonders hervorzuheben ist Johannes Berger, der als Co-Projektleiter, Gutachter und langjähriger Lehrstuhlinhaber entscheidend zum Gelingen beigetragen hat. Auch Bernhard Ebbinghaus, der ihm nachfolgte, unterstützte mich in der Abschlussphase meiner Forschung und war eine wertvolle Hilfe. Die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm war äußerst konstruktiv und solidarisch. Mein besonderer Dank gilt Bernhard Christoph, meinem langjährigen Projektmitarbeiter, dessen Beitrag für die Durchführung des Forschungsprojekts unverzichtbar war. Fast alle Aspekte dieser Arbeit sind in intensiver Zusammenarbeit und anregenden Diskussionen mit ihm entstanden. Er hat mich oft vor vorschnellen Interpretationen gewarnt, und sollte es dennoch dazu gekommen sein, liegt die Verantwortung nicht bei ihm.
