In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. Quarto (23 cm); [50] (of 52?), 788, [8] 152 pages. Lacks half-title. Four title pages, each with Pezzana's woodcut device showing Jove, Juno, Vulcan and Neptune. Occasional woodcut initials and ornaments. Shoulder notes. Bound in marbled paper with leather backstrip; backstrip decorated and titled in gilt. Binding quite worn, with joints tender and boards scuffed, edges exposed. Text generally quite good with occasional worm trails, the most severe of them in the margins. Pages evenly toned. References: Michel, V, 161. First Pezzana edition of the popular 16th-century "forest of many stories" by Spain's Pedro Mexia. (Nicolò Pezzana purchased the famous Giunti press in 1657, making this one of the first titles issued under his name.) The book is a Spanish Renaissance entry into the genre named "Silvae" by Statius, but this text falls more into the tradition of Xenophon's Symposium, Athenaeus, Macrobius, and Aulus Gellius, that is, expansive, shapeless, episodic, with masses of detail and a stupefying variety of topics and narratives. It was incredibly popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, reprinted in something like 106 editions in every European language. It was a rich treasure chest for later Renaissance authors, such as Miguel Cervantes (whose Quixote is also a forest of many tales, several of them lifted from Mexia) and Christopher Marlowe (who pulled his Tamburlaine from its pages). It is now thoroughly obscure.…

In den WarenkorbSecond Italian edition of the first and second Decadas of Barros, originally published in 1552-53 in Lisbon and first published in Italian by Valgrisio in 1561; the Portuguese original is excessively rare. The Decadas is one of the first great accounts of European overseas exploration and colonisation. The first part refers to Columbus, the discovery of the Americas and of Brazil. Barros (1496-1570), a Portuguese historian and civil servant, is of great importance in Brazilian history as being one of the 'donatorios'. The last volume, which appeared posthumously in 1615, covered the period from 1539 to the end of the century and was edited and written by Diogo do Couto. Barros' other works on geography, commerce, and navigation disappeared after his death. Second Italian edition. 2 vols in one, small 4to. in 8s, [10], 200, [7], [1 (blank)], 228 ff., woodcut device to titles, woodcut initials throughout; short marginal paper-flaw to 2a7, occasional light browning; late 19th-century red morocco gilt, all edges marbled and gilt, marbled endpapers, ribbon page-marker; a little darkened, minimally rubbed, short splits to hinges, nonetheless a very good copy. (8¼x6¼"). …

In den WarenkorbEncuadernación de tapa dura. Zustand: Muy bien. In-8º (20x15cm). 344 + (8)ff. Printer's device on title page; woodcut decorative initials. Some slight usual foxing. Contemporary vellum with inked title on spine. Very good copy. In 1560, Ulloa published his first and most famous original work, the biography of Charles V, an attempt is made to place a hasty trip to Spain, either in the nuncio's entourage, Prospero Publicola, or called by the King himself, as he wanted to magnify he himself in the nuncupatoria letter of the 1564 edition of the spurious book third of the family Epistles of Guevara. These and other imprecise allusions to the services he rendered to the two branches of the Habsburgs must have been the idea, pointed out by Nicolás Antonio, that in that decade he could have acted as business agent of Felipe II, of Emperor Maximiliano II and of the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. But the prosecution and condemnation that would end his life and the delays in mediating his case indicate that the role he played in the administration necessarily had to be temporary and subordinate, rather reduced to the task of mere interpreter or led to the most dangerous clandestine informant, despite the priceless propaganda work of the Catholic and imperial monarchy and, even more, the Spanish culture, whose canon of contemporary authors was responsible for translating or editing even from his imprisonment. According to the correspondence preserved, in 1563 Ulloa falsified the order to be able to print a book in the Hebrew language; discovered the crime at the beginning of 1568, he was sentenced to death, but a few days later he was commuted to life imprisonment when he denounced the instigators of the forgery. In den Warenkorb4to. 24, (2) pp. With woodcut printer's device to t. p. 18th century marbled wrappers. Rare second Italian edition (published a year after the almost unobtainable first Turin printing) of this historically important account of the events of the Battle of Szigetvár, fought between the Turkish and the Habsburgian forces. The final page treats the number of Turkish soldiers killed in the battle. - On 8 September 1566, after a month-long siege, the Ottoman army captured the fortress of Szigetvár and beheaded the defender, Miklós Zrínyi; more than 20,000 soldiers died. Shortly before the decisive battle, Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, who personally led the campaign, died of old age after a reign of 46 years - the longest in Ottoman history. In spite of the Turkish victory, the death of their leader, the heavy losses suffered during the siege, and an early winter caused the Ottoman army to withdraw to Istanbul. Only in 1689 did the Hungarians re-capture the city. - The first edition ("Historia Sigheti") was published in Latin by Caspar Stainhofer in Vienna in 1568. It was purportedly a translation from the Croat language, prepared by Samuel Budina (cf. Apponyi 422). The supposed author, Fran Crnka (Ferenc Czerno), was Zrínyi's surviving chamberlain. According to Göllner, the actual author (though more likely, the editor) may have been Alfonso de Ulloa (d. 1580), who also published "Commentari della Guerra" and "Historie di Europa", both appearing at Zaltieri's press in the same year as the present work. - Extremely rare; a single copy at auctions internationally since 1950. - Edit 16, CNCE 13812.
