"Black Orpheus" was founded by German expatriate professor and editor Ulli Beier in 1957 in an attempt to highlight African and Afro-American writers. Based in Ibadan, Nigeria, "Black Orpheus" would run until 1975 and included prominent writers such as Wole Soyinka, John Pepper Clark, and Aimé Césaire.
