The photographs document three performances held in Amsterdam and Wiesbaden. Here with a small text and drawing on the title page "ES war ein Mal?" + loosely laid in the invitation card for the opening of the exhibition on Tuesday December 11 '79 at 8 o'clock. On the text side of the invita tion card, behind "Photograph: anonym" in handwriting between brackets "War ich" and the same little drawing as the one on the title page, which makes it highly probable that this copy belonged to Hartmut Kowalke, the photographer of these performances reproduced in this catalogue. Text in English and German.

Documents two early performance pieces (1979) by Marina Abramovic and Ulay and a project called âDetourâ. In Performance 21, âThe Brink,â Ulay walks back and forth along the top of a wall while Marina walks back and forth on the shadow line of the wall as it falls on the ground. Black and white photographs document the 4 hour and 20 minute performance. In Performance 22, Ulay moves in response to commands âgoâ¦stopâ¦backâ¦â announced in an upredictable order by a strong voice and Marina sits still at the center of the space counting pieces of swandown out loud. Black and white photographs document the 1 hour and 30 minte performance. The project âDetourâ is represented by eleven photographs of the Australian landscape with dramatizing descriptions on the facing pages that turn trees, boulders, grasses and plains into active participants in a narrative.

The second page lists invited artists, among whom were Marina Abramovic and Ulay, Christian Boltanski, Hans Haacke, Dick Higgins, Jaroslaw Kozlowski, Natalia LL, Andrzej Partum, Petr Stembera, Jiri Valoch and others. Condition: some natural age toning to paper and wear to edges, folded once. VG+.

Produced for the exhibition featuring Eykleboom, Ulay/Abramovic, Hendricks, Heinisch, d'Armagnac and Dekker. Two offset-printed cards. An early work of correspondence art, produced by Marina Abramovic and her new partner Uwe F. Laysiepen (Ulay). They had first met in Amsterdam in 1976, and the attraction between the two was immediate: Ulay was Abramovi??s ?Russian hunting dog?, she was his ?kleinen Teufel? (little devil). Their romantic and artistic partnership would last for the next 12 years. These two cards, one with Abramovic?s short statement (dated Prague 17-1-1976), the other with Ulay?s riposte (dated Amsterdam 17-3-1976), were printed to mark the beginning of their partnership, and were designed to be mailed out to friends and correspondents. This set remains unmailed in their envelopes.

A handwritten note from Ulay and Marina Abramovic. The note invites the recipient to a viewing of Ulay?s ??environment? Fototot 2, as well as a video screening of the pair?s Venice Biennale performance ?Relation in Space?, occuring at 8pm on September 8th, 1976. The note is written in red pen on a single sheet of Biennale notepaper, and is signed by both Abramovic and Ulay. Mailed to the Dutch reportage photographer Willem Diepraam. Single sheet, folded in envelope.
