Das Projekt umfasst sowohl ökologische Grundlagenforschung verschiedener Teildisziplinen als auch die Behandlung sozio-ökonomischer Fragen und Schlussfolgerungen für eine Anwendung von Ergebnissen in der Landnutzungspraxis und im Schutzgebietsmanagement. Deutschland trägt für den Schutz und die Erhaltung dieses Lebensraumes und seiner spezifischen biologischen Vielfalt eine besondere Verantwortung. Die Ergebnisse des Projektes liefern Erkenntnisse, die beitragen können, um dieser Verantwortung gerecht zu werden.
