Zustand: Gut. 436 p. Leicht berieben, leicht vergilbt, sonst guter Zustand / Slightly rubbed, slightly yellowed, otherwise in very good condition. - The extraordinary revival of interest in physiognomy during the late eighteenth century may be said to have begun in 1775 with the publication of La- vaters Physio gnomische Fragmente, a work whose fame in Europe and America lasted a good hundred years after it first appeared. Although attention has already been drawn to Lavaters significance for the literary world and to the influence of his ideas on novelists of sundry nationalities, Graeme Tytler shows that, by initiating what he describes as the Lavaterian physiognomical era, the Fragmente had a much greater impact on European literary culture than has been hitherto acknowledged. After discussing Lavaters place in eighteenth-century German letters and his importance in the history of Western physiognomy, Dr. Tytler examines the literary portrait in the modern novel and suggests that the development of techniques of character description and the growth of observational powers of narrators and characters alike, as manifest in fiction from the 1790s onward, may be more fully appreciated when considered in the light of the physiognomical background previously delineated. Dr. Tytler concludes that, notwithstanding the excesses of much literary portraiture in the nineteenth-century novel, physiognomy played a beneficial role in the development of the genre. Graeme Tytler teaches modern languages in Oxford, England. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Leinen mit Schutzumschlag / Cloth with dust jacket.
