Zustand: Fine. - The approximately 2 inch high by 3 inch wide book label of pressman Fridolf Johnson is signed within its decorative green border "P. J. Conkwright". Near fine. After receiving a B.A. in history from the University of Kentucky, graphic designer and typographer P. J. Conkwright [1905-1986] joined the staff of the University of Oklahoma Press where he also received his M.A. in English and history with an emphasis on American printing history, which was the subject of his thesis. In 1939 he became the art director for the Princeton University Press and later taught design until his retirement in 1970. At Princeton he brought innovative and modern design to the conservative academic audience of university books and transformed the university into a center for innovative design. He had fifty books selected for AIGA's "Fifty Books of the Year" contest and received the AIGA Gold Medal in recognition of his work in 1955.

In den WarenkorbOn 34 x 27 cm unwatermarked laid paper. Dimensions of plate 34 x 23 cm. Dimensions of print 5.1 x 7.4 cm. Dimensions of print and text 15 x 7.4 cm. In fair condition, lightly aged, spotted and creased, with stub from album adhering to one margin. This is an early state of a print of which the British Library has a copy (acquired in 1867) of the undated third state, dated to 1820, carrying only four lines of text rather than the substantial amount present here. The present copy has, engraved in small letters immediately beneath the print: 'Robt. Balmanno delt. 1818. Jno. Pye sculpt.' Below this, in larger type is the text, with one footnotes, and beneath the text is the printer's slug: 'Johnson, Typ.' The text is headed 'Cenotaph erected at Stoke Park, to the Memory of the Poet Gray.', and begins: 'The delightful scenery of the Church Yard, and of Stoke Old Mansion, seen among the trees, are admirably described in the Elegy and the Long Story; but the once magnificent 'Ancient Pile,' is now a ruin. The lines on a Prospect of Eton College (distant about four miles) were written on this spot.' Next are given, in double column, the 'Inscriptions on the Cenotaph', which include four stanzas from the Elegy and the first eight lines of the Eton College ode. The body of the text concludes, regarding the engraving: 'The column in the distance is dedicated to Sir Edward Coke, and is another of those chaste ornaments with which the Proprietor, John Penn, Esq. has adorned this classic spot.' Above the printer's slug is the footnote, concerning the placement of Gray's tombstone in the print: 'Represented in the View under the church window, to the left.' The British Library copy of the third state carries only a four-line quotation from the twenty-ninth stanza of the Elegy ('with dirges [.] aged thorn.'). The British Library copy of the 1820 state of the engraving has all of the text present in this 1818 version removed. It has, beneath the four-line poetic quotation, another engraving, not present on the present copy, being a 'profile portrait of the poet in an oval'. Balmanno's letters and those of his wife Mary, to the Philadelphia engraver John Sartain, are in the New York Public Library.

While the pen name for the work is A. Marsh and initials at the end of the letter to the reader, marked A.B. has lead to the assumption that Aphra Behn wrote this work. - Aphra Behn was a prolific dramatist of the English Restoration and was one of the first English professional female writers. Her writing contributed to the amatory fiction genre of British literature. Along with Delarivier Manley and Eliza Haywood, she is sometimes referred to as part of "The fair triumvirate of wit.".

The second letter addressed by the secretary on the reverse, with four torn stamps and postmarks, to 'Mr. Lawrence Hodson | Bradbourne Hall | Ashbourne | Derbyshire'. The 'set of stations' referred to in the first letter is likely to have been based on those executed by Gill in stone in Westminster Cathedral, and completed in 1918. Letter One (3 November 1920): 1p., 12mo. After thanking Hodson for his letter, Gill informs him that 'Father Delaney [Father Bernard Delaney, OP] says he will certainly publish your article [in 'Blackfriars', the journal of the English Dominicans, of which he was editor] and I am very pleased.' Hodson's 'suggestion that a set of stations should be made in wood cuts is already in hand [last two words placed in quotation marks by Gill]'. Gill 'has seen the cuts' and thinks that 'something in the same manner would certainly be effective and might be very useful'. Gill is sending Hodson a copy of 'the little book that we brought out some years ago', and he will let him know 'as soon as the bigger ones materialise'. Letter Two (10 March 1921): 1p., landscape 12mo. He thanks Hodson for another letter, 'and for the note on "Dress" which I am sending on to the editor of "Blackfriars". I hope he will publish it, and am glad you approved of the article.' He continues: 'I will see that a print of the large woodcut of the first "Station" is sent to you.' He concludes by informing Hodson that he will be 'very pleased to see you when you can come to Ditchling'. While chairman of the brewers W. Butler & Co., Hodson had organised the Wolverhampton Art and Industrial Exhibition of 1902. A connoisseur of the arts, his collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings and library of illuminated manuscripts were auctioned by Sotheby's in 1906.

The salutation ('My dear Percy'), valediction ('Luv Robert'), and one additional word in autograph; the rest typed. He begins by thanking Muir for a copy of 'PHM 80', the volume celebrating Muir's eightieth birthday. 'Judging from the Roth picture you seem not to have changed a jot since I first met you post-war.' He finds the 'items' in the volume 'fascinating to read: from Meynell's typical promotional piece for Meynell to your offerings, ['offsprings!' added in autograph in the margin] far the most delightful and moving.' With reference to Fleming a bibliophile who founded the 'Book Collector' magazine he writes: 'A pity that Ian wasn't around to contribute one of his telling anecdotes of the early days.' And referring to his wife: 'A nice touch is that your birthday is the same as my Phoebe's.' He adds an astrological joke. He finds it hard to believe Muir 'as eighty, still less as retired. Or perhaps you aren't either and are just foxing.' He has, he jokes, 'always thought 80 a nice round figure to aim for as a springboard for the succeeding twenty years.' His own life 'continues much as ever, split between the Sunday Times and the glossy, with an agreeable number of sidelines, including the garden, of course.' He finds 'the constant change between those different worlds too entertaining to opt out.' He describes a family home at Majorca, which is 'ideal for scribbling novels'. 'After a wartime of movement and travel, that's now my ideal way of travelling: from one living-room to another six hours away.' He refers to his wife's 'wander-lusting' and current travels in South Africa, and gives details of his children. Turning to Fleming's wife Ann (the former Viscountess Rothermere) and only child Caspar (of whose suicide in 1975 he seems unaware) he writes: 'Annie I haven't seen for some time. She's had a lot of trouble with Caspar, but if people will push their children into boarding-school at the age of eight they shouldn't wonder why they can't communicate when the children are young men and women of eighteen. She left the little Victoria Square house where we had so many entertaining Book Collector collations and now, I believe, divides her time between Wiltshire and Albany and spending Bond money, as Ian prophesied, like ten drunken sailors on a spree.' Before concluding with renewed thanks for 'the pretty book and the subject's own calligraphical amendments', he suggests that despite the fact that 'Suffolk and Surrey are so far apart' they 'arrange to communicate at five-year intervals at most'. Regarding Harling and James Bond, see Ian Jack's article in the Guardian, 'Tight trousers and typography: Robert Harling, the mystery man who could have been James Bond', 10 October 2015. For Muir and Fleming see Nicolas Barker's 2017 Book Collector article 'Percy Muir: Ian Fleming's Book Dealer'.

Both letters in brown ink in Thorps calligraphic hand. ONE (to Sir Evelyn Wrench): 2pp, 8vo. On cream paper with brown italic letterhead. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. Signed 'Peter'. Begins: 'My dear Evelyn / We are going to make a great change in our way of life. For a long time I have felt that both physically & financially this house is beyond our strength. By the greatest good fortune (or something much better) we have, by special arrangement, been accepted as P. Gs for life by a Convent of the Poor Sisters of Nazareth, which has lately come here. Of course Nell [his wife the artist Ellen Syrett (1874-1970)] was distressed at this decision but is now reconciled and realises that there is no better solution, indeed no other.' In the second half of the letter he describes the arrangements, noting that his wife 'has already formed an affectionate tie with the Revd Mother - to whom I - incidentally - have completely lost my heart'. He ends in the hope that Wrench's book (on Geoffrey Dawson) 'is shaping well and nearing its end'. Annotated in red ink by Wrench to the recipient of the next letter: 'WW This may interest you. Don't bother to return. It shews where the Thorps are going to spend the last years of their life'. TWO (to 'Miss Wrench'): 4pp, 32mo. Sixty-four lines of text. On two leaves of grey paper, each with a red ruled border at the head. In good condition, lightly aged. Begins: 'Dear Miss Wrench / It is true that I once knew something about printing (if not quite so much as Evelyn suggests!) but it was about the designing side only. I knew enough of course of the practical side to be able to design intelligently but never did any actual work on the press. "Architects" we said "didn't need actually to lay the bricks!" But it is no bad thing when they actually do so.' After commenting on the changes over the past twenty years to the 'conditions of the printing trade' he states: 'If you are approaching printing as a hobby then I know of no better machine than Adana. But if you are thinking of actual printing as an income maker then I certainly repeat the advice of Punch to those about to marry "Dont!"' He explains why he is less critical regarding 'Acting as agent or representative for a printing house'. A friend with an Adana 'finds the returns quite inadequate to the expenditure & the labour'. 'If Edinboro has no good printers it must have sadly changed. It was (and so far as my knowledge goes still is) one of the best - if not actually the best district for fine printing.' After declining to give 'misleading' advice, 'except in the very discouraging negative form above indicated', he turns to Wrench: 'I hear from Evelyn occasionally. It is wonderful the way he carries on his work and the fine patience with which he bears his very heavy trial. / He tells me has [sic] written 300,000 words on Dawson and is now engaged in cutting a 100,000. A formidable task.' (Wrench's book on Sir Geoffrey Dawson was published in 1955.) He ends by repeating his disinclination to 'give advice out of ignorance': 'My memories of Edinbro are of one of the most beautiful cities (with Bath & Oxford as rivals. But oh! so cold & windswept.'.
