Unlike the large fritillaries, covered in a previous part of this series (Tuzov, 2003), genera Boloria, Proclossiana and Clossiana show some peculiarities that have to be taken into account in the study of their systematics. First there are many "young" species originated in the postglacial period, showing small morphological hi…atuses. Transitional populations, especially in the mountain Boloria species, are often found. Second, usually the populations are localized, with little or no migratory activity, therefore isolation mechanisms in the genitalia structure have not been developed. As a consequence the genitalia morphology usually does not provide helpful diagnostic characters, even with taxa showing significant differences in their external features. Third, since at this stage the separation of some taxa into different species seems not to be completed, they could be ranked as semispecies. As in the previous Nymphalidae volume of this series (Tuzov, 2003), a discussion about synonyms has been left out of the present work. Milano.
