James Percival Tuttle (1857-1913) "was one of New York City's most prominent proctologists. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1881, and was later associated with the New York Polyclinic Hospital, where he established a chair of rectal and intestinal surgery. In his paper Tuttle stated that cures could be obtained for ten percent of all patients treated surgically for cancer of the rectum, and that radical surgery prolonged life." Ira M.
