Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Space Between by Gerry Turcotte is a wry, tender novel that explores faith, failure, love, and longing through a series of sharply observed episodes. Moving from boyhood to adult reckoning, Turcotte writes with humor, intellectual depth, and emotional honesty about the spaces between belief and doubt, devotion and rebellion, intimacy and solitude. This is a reflective, often laugh-out-loud meditation on identity, grace, and becoming human. Testimonials: 'What Gerry Turcotte has written is an act of welcoming into his unique world. At times comic, at other times tragic, these stories travel back to childhood days to contemplate how small incidents have profound implications. In this semi-autobiographical novel, he relives the hilarity and the trauma of his protagonist's early life. Readers will rejoice in exploring his insights and his conclusions.' - David Staines 'With wit and wisdom, Gerry Turcotte invites us into a vivid coming-of-age journey that spans the full spectrum of human emotion. The Space Between enchants with the joy of youthful mischief, the exhilaration of first love, and the tender complexities of family life. Though deeply personal, Turcotte's story resonates broadly, offering each reader a chance to rediscover their own adolescence through a lens of wonder, honesty, and profound appreciation.' - Ross Lockhart, Dean of St. Andrew's Hall at the University of British Columbia.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. The Oxford History of the Novel in English - Vol 12. This volume offers a comprehensive account of the production of English language novels and related prose fiction since 1950 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. After the Second World War, the rise of cultural nationalism in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand and movements towards independence in the Pacific islands, together with the turn toward multiculturalism and transnationalism in the postcolonial world, has called into question the standard national frames for literary history. This has resulted in an increasing recognition of formerly marginalised peoples and a repositioning of these national literatures in a world literary context. This multi-authored volume explores the implications of such radical change through its focus on the novel and the short story, which model the crises in evolving narratives of nationhood and the reinvention of postcolonial identities. DJ; Heavy. Top corner slightly bumped; slight wear to the dust jacket along the edges. 638 pages.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Unsettled Remains: Canadian Literature and the Postcolonial Gothic examines how Canadian writers have combined a postcolonial awareness with gothic metaphors of monstrosity and haunting in their response to Canadian history. The essays gathered here range from treatments of early postcolonial gothic expression in Canadian literature to attempts to define a Canadian postcolonial gothic mode. Many of these texts wrestle with Canada's colonial past and with the voices and histories that were repressed in the push for national consolidation but emerge now as uncanny reminders of that contentious history. The haunting effect can be unsettling and enabling at the same time. In recent years, many Canadian authors have turned to the gothic to challenge dominant literary, political, and social narratives. In Canadian literature, the ''postcolonial gothic'' has been put to multiple uses, above all to figure experiences of ambivalence that have emerged from a colonial context and persisted into the present. As these essays demonstrate, formulations of a Canadian postcolonial gothic differ radically from one another, depending on the social and cultural positioning of who is positing it. Given the preponderance, in colonial discourse, of accounts that demonize otherness, it is not surprising that many minority writers have avoided gothic metaphors. In recent years, however, minority authors have shown an interest in the gothic, signalling an emerging critical discourse. This ''spectral turn'' sees minority writers reversing long-standing characterizations of their identity as ''monstrous'' or invisible in order to show their connections to and disconnection from stories of the nation.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume seeks to map an understanding of the Italian experience onto the broader picture of diasporic stories, though with an anchor in the Australian-Italian experience. It brings together key essays and testimonials that frame a picture of Italy's rich legacy at «home», in Europe more widely, and in the (post)colonial sphere, with a particular emphasis on the Australian experience. The essays collected here focus on the way an Italian Australian story has emerged and evolved in its own unique way. In some respects it might be possible to define Australia, through this community, as an Italian space, very much inscribed and described by the many voices that characterise it. What is clear throughout these pages is that past, present and future circulate through and around each other, just as notions of nation - colonial, postcolonial, emigrant and immigrant - jostle for purchase in what is in fact a contested space always under negotiation.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This is a pioneering work published here for the first time in its complete form. At a time when Gothic studies still concentrated on traditional European and American Gothic, the author laid the foundations for the exploration of how Gothic conventions were transported and transformed in places remote from Europe. Through a detailed reading of 19th- and 20th-century examples of Canadian and Australian Gothic fiction, this work demonstrates the transformative potential of a once much-maligned mode in what were arguably neglected national literatures.…
