8vo. xxiv, 88 pp. 4 portraits. Rust and white gilt-stamped cloth. Fine. William Tully (1785-1859), became a medical practitioner in Connecticut; president and professor at the Vermont Academy of Medicine; faculty of medicine at Yale. The forward by John F. Fulton explains that Tully is an inadvertent Boswell to Nathan Smith (176…2-1829), the founder of Dartmouth Medical School, and the co-founder of Yale's School of Medicine. Tully studied with Smith for the period of his journal, and his observations regarding Smith, as well as life in 1808 America, make for wonderful reading.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [modest wear to extremities, tiny tears and very slight fraying at spine ends, vintage bookplate on front pastedown, remnant of removed sticker on front endpaper]. (pen & ink drawings, illustrated endpapers) Episodic narrative of a hobo who gets tossed into a small-t…own jail which happens to be populated with an amazingly diverse gallery of crooks and lowlifes, individual chapter-portraits of whom comprise the bulk of the book. Tully, referred to by the New York Times as the (self-appointed) "high priest of the present-day cult of the underworld," was by 1930 firmly ensconced in Hollywood as a journalist and sometime screenwiter, but would continue to reach back to his vagabond early-life experiences for story material for many years thereafter. Illustrated by William Gropper (illustrator).

dj. Reprint. Octavo (20.75cm); dark red cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in yellow on spine and front cover; pictorial endpapers; yellow topstain; dustjacket; [viii],280pp; illus. Slight forward lean, spine ends gently nudged, with a handful of small stains to right edge of textblock; Very Good+. Dustjacket is edgewor…n, spine-sunned, with a few small chips at spine ends, several short tears and attendant creases; Very Good. "Despite its cheery-sounding title, Circus Parade is light years away from Toby Tylerland, presenting a dark, violent and thoroughly unromanticized portrait of life on the road with a traveling show -- described by Tully as "generally a canvas nest of petty thieves and criminals among the lower gentry." The book's depictions of casual brutality -- including a shocking account of the troupe's exploitation of a young black girl's sexual favors -- got it banned in Boston and caused an uproar with circus fans (and, unsurprisingly, circus owners), which helped to put the kibosh on a proposed film adaptation by James Cruze" (PROUTY 4).

Boston Med. Surg. J., 48/ 8. - Boston, David Clapp, Wednesday, March 23, 1853, 8°, pp.149-168, fine wrappers. First Edition! "Communicated for the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal." "We are very sorry to notice, in some of our medical journals, severe and uncalled-for strictures upon the work of Dr. Tully on the Materia Medic…a and Therapeutics, now being issued from the press in monthly parts. We are sorry for two reasons. One is, that such strictures, unjust in themselves, may have the effect to lessen, if not entirely to take away, the patronage of the work, and so discourage those generous individuals who have taken upon themselves the responsibility of its publication. The other reason is, that the editors of these journals will regret, in the end, if the publication should go on to completion, their too hasty remarks, and be as sorry as we are that they were ever made. If these editors will let Dr. Tully get fairly into his subject before they " let fly their pop-guns," we assure them that they will have no cause to regret following the laisscz faire plan. In the mean time, however, should they continue to send forth their extemporaneous thoughts in the same strain, they may, so far as their journals have influence, do great disservice to the cause of medical science, in the department of the materia medica and therapeutics; especially if such remarks should discourage the patrons of the work-for it cannot go on without patronage. We wilt venture to add here, for we profess to have some knowledge of what Dr. Tully can do, that if the work should be completed, it will be unsurpassed in fullness and accuracy and in practical utility, by any other work, of the same sort, in the English language. We say this without intending to undervalue other works of the kind that have been already published." William Tully (1785-1859), medical practitioner in Connecticut; president and professor at the Vermont Academy of Medicine; faculty of medicine at Yale.
