Es ist neuerdings ordentlich Mode geworden für Prediger, Professor und Lohnschreiber, diesen Gegenstand zu behandeln, und traurige Arbeit haben sie zum größten Teil daraus gemacht, den Spott und das Mitleid der Urteilsfähigen herausfordernd. Daß diejenigen, die in den sozialistischen Zwischenabteilungen hervorragen, sich nicht vollkommen bewußt sind, um was es sich handelt, geht aus den Stellungen, die sie einnehmen, klar hervor. Wäre dies der Fall, wären sie strenge, logische Denker, wären sie konsequent, ihre Vernunft würde sie längst in das eine oder das andere Extrem getrieben haben. Assails the integrity of "Single Tax" advocate Henry George, who (Tucker claims) cynically shifted his public posture regarding the Haymarket Trial in order to improve his viability as a candidate for Secretary of State of New York. Uncommon.

First Edition. Octavo (23.5cm.). Original black glazed wrappers printed and double-ruled in red; pp.206-396,[2]. Wrappers oxidized, chipped at margins and with a few closed tears but no substantial losses; text remains clean, supple and unmarked; about Very Good overall. Tucker's first and scarcest literary and political journal, described by Longa (Anarchist Periodicals in English) as ".the one organ in which the prominent pioneer expositors of American anarchism were united" (p. 207). The Review ran for only four issues before folding due to lack of funds, at which time Tucker spent three years as a reporter for the Boston Daily Globe in order to save enough money to start a new publication, Liberty, which would survive from 1881 to 1908 and cement Tucker's position as the leading exponent of Individualist Anarchism in America. Contributors to the current issue include Elisée Reclus ("Female Kinship and Maternal Filiation"); Dyer Lum (a poem, "Nirvana"); Stephen Pearl Andrews ("The Labor Dollar"); Lysander Spooner ("The Law of Prices"); and the first part of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's "System of Economical Contradictions," translated by Tucker himself and making its first appearance in English in these pages. The Proudhon contribution marks a significant first appearance: this essay, originally published in 1847, is cited as the work that created a permanent rift between Proudhon and Marx, engendering a bitter split between the Anarchist and Communist factions of the First International. Proudhon's essay also bore a strong influence on Tucker's own individualist anarchist philosophy and, by extension, much of American anarchism to follow. A truly rare survival from the formative years of American anarchist philosophy; we have seen only a few issues of Radical Review in original wrappers over more than thirty years of bookselling. Near Fine with shallow chipping along edges of wraps (heaviest at head); front wrap starting at head, spotting to textblock edges, slight offsetting to tissue guard from frontispiece. An unsophisticated copy. Wraps are in excellent shape given their fragility and age. Written in 1862 while in a St. Petersburg prison awaiting transfer to Siberia, Russian nihilist Chernyshevsky wrote this fictional response to Turgenev's novel Father and Sons, which had just been published that same year. What's to Be Done's publication was a momentous event in Russian literary and political circles that resonated for decades; as literary scholar Joseph Frank stated, "Chernyshevsky's novel, far more than Marx's Capital, supplied the emotional dynamic that eventually went to make the Russian Revolution." American individualist anarchist Benjamin Tucker translated and published this edition, beating Nathan Haskell Dole and S. S. Skidelsky's translation to market by a mere two days, as best this cataloguer could tell from contemporary newspaper ads and reviews. A highly influential work with themes of economic freedom that inspired generations of revolutionaries including Lenin, Kropotkin, Rosa Luxemburg, and Ayn Rand. Lenin would borrow the title for his epic political pamphlet, first published in 1901. Line, Ettlinger, & Gladstone p. 16.
