Dr. Trusler). Plain leather spine, old marbled boards with curiously a faint family tree of Royalty with crowns printed on them. Boards rubbed and stained, corners worn with board just showing at tips, 2 short closed tears neatly repaired, no loss, the last 3 pages of text have a tiny nick to fore-edge, all 8 catalogue pages have 2 tiny nicks to fore-edges, not affecting text, first free endpaper has neat repair to lower margin, a few tiny pale marks to margins, very occasional pale foxing, old ink names to first free endpaper, inner paper hinges cracked, binding sound, no loose pages, floral bookplate on first pastedown of Irene Gosse, author of "A Florilege: Chosen From the Old Herbals". A very good copy. Bound in original full leather, which is chipped and scuffed and partially torn off in a couple places, but which is still attached both front and back. Glue residue (from a book cover that has since been removed) on inside covers. A name has been clipped from the top of the title…page, but the handwritten date March 1801 and the words Harlow and Essex are still there. Half title page with an engraving of an old man leading the way for a younger one, and the words see with your own eyes in the engraving. Verso of that half-title engraving is the Trusler coat of arms, which serves as a frontispiece to the book. 5 page introduction before the pagination begins at page 1. Page 19/20 has a long closed tear. Page 37/38 is missing a large chunk from the upper corner. 29 of the first 30 engravings are hand-colored (but not particularly well). The rest, about 100 of them, are in the original condition. They are a very fine set of illustrations, showing in great detail various trades; printing, shopkeeping, tailor, fishing & angling, tanner, brick making, brewing, and more. There are hot air balloons, Africans, shipwrecks, executions and pillories, as well as illustrations showing all the punishments of heaven. There are images of the human skeleton and organs, muscles and blood vessels. There are several nudes, both male and female. All are full of life and detail. The illustrator, John Bewick, is often regarded as the first professional illustrator. His is best know for his collaboration with his more famous older bother Thomas on Gay s Fables; they produced a herbal together as well. A scarce illustrated title. Bound in handsome contemporary mottled calf, with the spine featuring neat… gilt ruling and direct gilt titling. The binding remains tight and structurally sound, with the text block firmly secured. The boards present minor rubbing, edge-wear, and softening to the extremities commensurate with age, while the spine is exceptionally clean, suggesting a highly sympathetic, expert historic reback. Internally, the pages are largely crisp and bright, displaying only occasional, mild age-toning and marginal spotting that does not detract from the clarity of the woodcut illustrations. The endpapers remain intact, bearing a clean armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Catalogue Note: A highly desirable First Edition of Rev. John Truslerâs moralizing work, famously illustrated by the celebrated wood-engraver John Bewick.
