Louis de Vries's signature cannot be that common since he died tragically young as a result of a car accident. He was of Jewish extraction, and his sister Clara (1915-1942), a trumpeter praised by Louis Armstrong and the leader of an all-woman band, The Rosian Ladies, died at Auschwitz. Lengthwise on a leaf of 11 x 17.5 cm cream paper, with rounded corners, extracted from an autograph album. In good condition, lightly aged. No other writing on either side of the leaf. Firmly written and underlined. Reads: 'With best / regards/ Louis de Vries'.

On one side of 12 x 8.5 cm leaf of cream paper with rounded outer edges, torn from an autograph album. In good condition, with blank reverse. Large sprawling signature covering the whole page. A year after Colyer's death a group of family members, friends and musicians met at the London School of Economics to set up the Ken Colyer Trust with the original aim of publishing this autobiography. For 25 years it supported the work of established jazz musicians and encouraged young musicians and audiences. Contains frontispiece, 262 printed pages of text with photographs to the central pages. The original version as Ken intended and possibly with some libellous references. 1 of 25 Limited Edition copies in racing green leatherette binding published by Millbury in Ryarsh, Kent. We purchased this copy directly from the owner's of Millbury who informed us that these Limited Editions were originally to be given as gifts to close friends and family of Ken Colyer, it does not have a limitation page as issued. A good letter, full of content. 2pp, 8vo. Air mail letter with New York postmark, 30 September 1963. Signed 'Marian' and addressed to 'Mr. Les Tompkins / 96, St Helier Ave / Morden / Surrey'. Writing after the publication of an interview with her by Tompkins in 'Crescendo', she begins: 'Dear Les. Thank you, & Tony also, for the copies of Crescendo - Boy! I was verbose, wasn't I! I got a kick out of the record review, & thought everyone was very complimentary. Wish Steve Race had been there! He always insists you can tell a female player (and of course I think that is a lot of you-know-what)'. 'Like a real idiot', she has lost his questionnaire, and asks for another copy. 'Big news. I'm going on a month's concert tour with Benny Goodman. He called me, & I decided it would be a fun thing to do - Red Norro will be going, Jimmy Wyble on guitar, & Steve Swallow on bass - Benny & I have been rehearsing together & he's really inspiring to play with, and very charming -'. She announces the return of Dill Jones ('he reopened at the Gaslight Club for an indefinite stay'), and says that she and 'Jimmy' (her husband) 'played the Central Plaza yesterday': 'it's always a big reunion for us with our friends. Some sitters in were Jo Jones, Tyrel Glenn, Wild Bill Davision, Cutty Cutshall & Louis Metcalfe.' They have both 'been busy writing lately and are beginning to get some good songs'. She hopes that 'Sarah Vaughn will do another of my tunes in her next album. Quincey [sic] Jones took a couple with him when he left for England last week.'.

8 x 10 inch. A black and white studio photograph signed "Sincerely Erskine Hawkins". Fine condition.-Hawkins was a big band leader and trumpeter best remembered for "Tuxedo Junction.".

To Enzo Bentivoglio, Marquese di Gualtieri (1575-1639) in Ferrara, thanking him for earlier support when he was "ill far from my land" and relating that Lorenzo di Medici (1599-1648) had hired or promoted him as trumpeter. - Ottavio Ferrini later joined the court orchestra of Grand Duke Ferdinando II de' Medici, where he played alongside the trumpeter and composer Girolamo Fantini. In the years 1635/36, Ferrini received a higher salary than Fantini, probably due to his senior rank. - Traces of folds. With some browning and foxing. A clipping to the blank leaf.
