Early issue of an important American academic journal, with an article discussing psychological tests on Helen Keller [good science but poor observation, the psychologist misspelling her name as Kellar]. Ownership stamp of Edward T. Pierce [1851-1919], Superintendent of the Pasadena school system from 1883 - 1889. In 1889, he was elected as first Principal of Chico Normal School, where he served 4 years]. In his autobiography, he said "I felt then and still feel that God can give no man or woman any higher or more exalted work than that of training teachers.". As first principal, he chose the faculty, began recruiting students, and planned the curriculum for the normal school. He started the model training school in 1890. In 1893, he left Chico to accept the position of president of the Los Angeles Normal School. He remained there until 1904 when he retired.

Single leaf, recto only, black ink. A brief letter from Joseph Trumbull (17821861) then a U. S. Congressman from Connecticut, later governor of that state to an acquaintance in Washington, D. C., introducing Francis J. Clerc, who was about to travel both there and Richmond, VA, where he would be residing for the winter. Clerc was the son of Laurent Clerc, who was born deaf in France, emingrated to the United States in 1816, and founded the first permanent school for the deaf in Hartford with noted educator Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.
