Truman provides detailed descriptions of California's vineyards, citrus groves, and other agricultural products, reinforcing the state's image as an agricultural paradise. His book was among the early works to document the success of the citrus industry, which later became one of California's defining economic forces. Truman visited nearly every orange grove and vineyard in Los Angeles County gathering his statistics. Truman discusses specific mines, residences, fruit orchards, vineyards, and ranches as well as general patterns of agriculture, sheep and cattle raising, irrigation, and mineral resources. Beyond Los Angeles, he describes the towns and cities of Anaheim, Wilmington, and San Bernardino. The book was part of a larger trend of 'booster' literature aimed at attracting settlers, investors, and tourists to California. Truman depicted the state as a land of opportunity, emphasizing its fertile soil, mild climate, and economic potential. His work contributed to the influx of settlers, especially from the Midwest and East Coast. Like many writers of the time, Truman extolled California's climate as ideal for health seekers. This aspect of his work helped to establish Southern Californiaespecially Los Angelesas a haven for those suffering from respiratory ailments and other conditions. The book included vivid descriptions of California's landscapes, from coastal views to mountain ranges, helping to romanticize and market the state's natural beauty. Truman also discussed missions and early settlements, providing valuable historical insight. By portraying California as a semi-tropical wonderland with boundless potential, Semi-Tropical California helped drive migration and investment in the region. It contributed to the broader narrative that Southern California was an American Eden, setting the stage for later land booms. Major Ben C. Truman was a well-known civil war correspondent and journalist and publicist, often working to promote California's interests. His reputation added credibility to his writings, making them widely read and influential. Truman wrote for the Los Angeles Star, which he acquired in 1873. Much of the book is expanded from articles he wrote for the newspaper. He defines "semi-tropical" California as portions of Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Bernardino, and San Diego Counties, but devotes most of its attention to the city and county of Los Angeles and neighboring San Gabriel Valley. First Edition. Octavo (23cm.); publisher's purple pictorial cloth stamped in gilt; 204pp. Boards rather rubbed with some brief splitting of cloth, corners bumped and cloth starting to peel at bottom fore-edge corner of upper cover, spine toned, rear free endpaper torn and partly affixed to rear pastedown. Good overall, though internally sound and upper cover gilt still quite brilliant. Promotional work by the Rhode Island-born Civil War Major, who first arrived in Los Angeles to supervise the postal service only to leave this position in order to found the "Los Angeles Daily Star," in which he promoted California's "post-frontier promise of becoming a pastoral civilization. Truman envisioned a livelihood of hard work, though without exertion, that would bring into being a culture of prosperity, civility, and art" (Peter James Holliday, "American Arcadia" (2016), p. 51).
