In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Poor. First Edition. Publication: Liverpool, W. Robinson, 1810 Formatting: 4to, pp. [vi], 248 (Incomplete). Condition Report: Poor. Text block secured and tightened by a structurally sound, modern dark-blue quarter-leather re-spine with unoxidised gilt lettering. The book is incomplete, terminating abruptly a…t Chapter 15, page 248. The original printed paper boards, retained during the rebinding process, are heavily rubbed, darkened, and chipped at the extremities, displaying considerable historical shelf-wear and surface loss. Internally, the untrimmed, deckled page edges are visibly darkened, and the leaves exhibit typical age-toning, moderate foxing, and scattered moisture stains throughout. Despite the robust secondary binding, the substantial loss of original text and the heavy wear to the original boards dictate this final antiquarian grade. Catalogue Note: Often referred to as "Troughton's History of Liverpool," this volume represents an early and important edition of the work, explicitly printed in Liverpool by W. Robinson. The original text was issued with the promise of wood-cut embellishments, a plan of the town, and a regional map spanning 40 miles around the seaport. While authorship is traditionally ascribed to T. Troughton, some historical records also credit the Irish-born writer John Corry. The volume features a dedication leaf containing a handsome wood-cut view of St. James' Church, humbly inscribed by T. Troughton to the Rev. John Smith. Complete copies of this edition are notably scarce on the open market; the supplementary maps and plates were frequently excised by early owners for framing, leaving many surviving copies lacking key illustrative elements. This specific copy has been preserved in a secondary quarter-leather binding that retains the rare original printed boards. It bears standard, charming 19th-century provenance on the front endpaper: an ink ownership signature reading "A.J.B. Richardson, 1886," gifted from an "aunt E.G.". An evocative, early 19th-century chronicle of one of Britain's most vital port cities. History of Liverpool traces the development of the thriving seaport from its earliest authenticated periods through to the early 1800s. Offering a deep dive into the maritime, architectural, and social evolution of the area, this work remains a cornerstone text for regional historians and collectors of Merseyiana, reflecting the civic pride of a rapidly industrializing commercial hub. T. Troughton (illustrator).
