Ernest Cadman Colwell [1901-1974] was a New Testament scholar and textual critic. Educated at the University of Chicago [Ph.D., 1930], Colwell was asked to stay on as an instructor of New Testament. By 1939, he was a full professor and newly elected Dean of the Divinity School of the University. He was promoted to Dean of the Faculties (1943), then Vice-President (1944) and succeeded to the Presidency (1945) when Robert M. Hutchins became Chancellor. Colwell held this post until 1951. He then served in several capacities in Emory University before he became head of the newly reorganized (out of USC) School of Theology at Claremont, where he served until his retirement. Colwell was a world class scholar and wrote many important articles and books in his field.
