A perfect copy. - From the preface: IN THIS BOOK I have tried to describe a stylistic tradition and a group of poems written within the tradition. The two are inseparable, and I have taken my descriptive terminology from the historical context wherever it has been possi…ble so that it might determine the questions to be asked about the poems and, as a result, the things that might be said about them. In order to establish the context I have devoted the opening chapters to the tradition of the classical plain style in antiquity and its adaptation by Jonson and the men he admired to the poetic and rhetorical controversies of the Renaissance. Normally one would go to the English rhetoric books of Thomas Wilson, George Puttenham, Henry Peacham the elder, and others for descriptions of contemporary styles. With the possible exception of Wilson, however, they were primarily concerned with methods of amplification and with the more ornate literary conventions of the Petrarchans, whose candidly enthusiastic supporter, Abraham Fraunce, concludes: "Thus much of Eloquution in tropes and figures: in al which obserue this one lesson, the more the better" (The Arcadian Rhetorike, p. 105). Such treatises dealt with the plain style only in connection with the narratio of a formal oration. Jonson's main sources were the scholars of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries such as the Scaligers, Daniel Heinsius, and Isaac Casaubon; the humanists such as Erasmus and Vives; and the anti-Ciceronians such as Lipsius and Bacon, who drew mainly upon Seneca for their stylistic principles. In the most general terms, the emphasis shifted from expression to content, from the Ciceronian comment of Ascham, "Ye know not what hurt ye do to learning, that care not for words, but for matter," to Bacon's Senecan reversal of the proposition when he lamented that "Men began to hunt more after words than matter."
