Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - D. Christoph Iac. Trew . Cedrorum Libani Historia is a detailed botanical and historical treatise on the cedar of Lebanon by Christoph Jacob Trew. The work presents a thorough botanical characterization of the cedar, comparing it to the larch, fir, and pine. A significant portion of the text is dedicated to examining whether this tree is the same one celebrated above all others in the sacred texts, either by Herodotus or Berossus. Written in Latin, this book offers valuable insights into the botanical knowledge and biblical interpretations of the 18th century, making it an essential resource for historians of science, botany, and religious studies. Woodcut ornaments and historiated initials; four engraved folding plates of anatomical sections, in some cases enriched by bright colors highligthing different blood vessels. Extra leaf inserted at the very end of the volume with a handwritten French text regarding a medical case. Author's dedication on the title page to the famous Helvetian doctor Albrecht von Haller (Bern October 16, 1708 - December 12, 1777, widely recognized as one of the founders of modern physiology, trained as a physician, he made groundbreaking contributions to anatomy, botany, and experimental science, combining careful observation with systematic experimentation at a time when scientific methods were still developing. Haller is especially known for his work in physiology, where he introduced the important distinction between the ability of muscles to respond to stimuli and the responsiveness of nerves, helping lay the foundation for later research in neurophysiology). Some browning and foxing, paper loss to the upper right margin of the first leaves slighlty affecting a few letters on the title page.First edition. In this text, Trew focuses on the anatomical structure of the tongue, describing in detail both its salivary ducts and its vascular system. The work is significant within the development of anatomy because it contributes to a more precise understanding of how the tongue is supplied with blood and how saliva is distributed, which are essential aspects for functions such as taste, speech, and digestion. The study reflects the broader 18th-century shift toward careful dissection and empirical observation, moving away from purely theoretical descriptions of the human body. Like many works of its time, it combines textual explanation with attention to structural detail, helping to refine medical knowledge and laying groundwork for later advances in physiology and oral anatomy.Christoph Jacob Trew was an 18th-century German physician, naturalist, and scholar, born on April 26, 1695, in Lauf an der Pegnitz and died on July 18, 1769, in Nuremberg. He is best known for his work in medicine and botany, as well as for his role in promoting scientific illustration during the Enlightenment. He developed a strong passion for medicine, botany and natural history, building extensive collections of plant specimens and collaborating with leading scientists of his time. He maintained connections with important figures such as Albrecht von Haller and supported the exchange of scientific knowledge across Europe. One of his most significant contributions was his involvement in the production of beautifully illustrated botanical works. He sponsored and edited publications that combined scientific accuracy with artistic excellence, helping to elevate botanical illustration as both a scientific and aesthetic discipline. Through these efforts, Trew played a key role in documenting plant diversity and making scientific knowledge more accessible during the 18th century.Italian Union Catalogue, IT\ICCU\TO0E\087140; OCLC, 257725641. Written in graphite to the recto of the flyleaf, "Ex libris David, Lord Perth, d. 2003. Stobhall." Christoph Jakob Trew (1695-1769), a wealthy physician at Nuremberg and amateur botanist, admired the talent and skill of his younger countryman, Georg Ehret (1708-1770), a gardener by trade and a hobbyist painter. The pair had met while Ehret was at the service of a Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl. Trew was taken with Ehret, both as a patron and a partner. Plantae selectae was conceived as early as 1742 when Trew wrote to Christian Thran in Carlsruhe, saying, "Every year I receive some beautifully painted exotic plants [from Ehret] and have already more than one hundred of them, which with other pieces executed by local artists, should later on, Deo volante, constitute an appendicem to Weinmann's publication but will, I hope, find a better reception than his." In 1748, an agreement was reached that Johann Jacob Haid (1704-1767) from Augsburg should provide the engravings, and the first installation of 10 engravings appeared in 1750. Although Ehret had never traveled to the tropics, the specemina were selected based on botanical interest and exotic appeal. Influenced by his friendship with Linnaeus, Ehret was moved to analyze the structure of the plant prior to representing it. Of Ehret's work, Linnaeus wrote to Trew that "the miracles of our century in the natural sciences are your work of Ehret's plants.nothing to equal them was seen in the past or will be in the future." The two men were close collaborators and friends -- Trew named the genus Ehretia (plate XXV) in George's honor -- until their deaths. Trew died in 1769 and Ehret passed the following year, leaving the last three parts unfinished. The work was seen through the press by Benedict Christian Vogel (1745-1825), a Professor of Botany at the University of Altdorf. David Drummond, the 17th Earl of Perth, was born into the political milieu; his father was a career diplomat, who had attended the Paris peace conference in 1919, was the first secretary general of the League of Nations, and in late life served as Ambassador to Rome. Drummond was educated at Downside and Trinity, Cambridge, and, looking to restore the family's fortune, embarked on a banking career at J. Henry Schroder. Drummond succeeded in buying back his ancestral home (Stobhall Castle in Perthshire) from the Earl of Ancaster in 1954, and with the help of his wife Nancy, together they set about the restoration of the building. In the final stages of the project, Lord Perth was able to indulge one of his life-long passions -- book collecting. With an affinity for fine printed natural history, Plantae selectae is truly emblematic of his bibliophilic habits. The collation of this work is variable, examples without portraits of Trew and Vogel have been recorded while others often lack section titles. The present example possesses both but is without the very rare supp.…

In den WarenkorbNo binding. Zustand: Very Good. 445 x 295 mm., early wash coloured copperplate engraving with gilt title, in good condition. One of the most famous prints of bananas. Christoph Jacob Trew (1695-1769) was a wealthy physician and noted bibliophile. The highly talented artist George Dionysius Ehret (1708-70) enjoyed the lifelong patronage of Trew and they became great friends. It was Trew who encouraged Ehret to study the plants from a scientific perspective as well as an artistic one. Trew supported the publication of the 'Plantae Selectae' from 1750 for which he supplied the descriptions. It has been called 'one of the greatest eighteenth century botanical books published' (De Belder) and is distinguished by its gold titles. Hunt states that Ehret's illustrations 'achieve realism, majesty, ineffable colour, all in one breathtaking look'. The 'Hortus Nitidissimus' was called "the most sumptuous of the florilegia" in the De Belder catalogue. Trew intended the book to be a magnificent 'gallery of the most colourful and ravishing flowers that could be grown in Europe'. Like the 'Plantae Selectae' being published at the same time, many of the plates are the work of Ehret. In den WarenkorbOne of the greatest eighteenth-century botanical books, with 100 fine hand-coloured plates after paintings by Georg Dionysius Ehret. Georg Dionysius Ehret, the greatest botanical artist of the 18th century, was unrivalled in his ability to 'achieve realism, majesty, ineffable colour, all in one breathtaking look' (Hunt). He was born in Heidelberg in 1710, and originally worked as a gardener, practising drawing in his spare time. His artistic abilities led him into the service of a Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl who had commissioned him to copy plates from van Rheede tot Draakestein's Hortus indicus malabaricus (1678-1693). It was during this period that Trew met Ehret. 'Trew was a Nuremberg physician, anatomist, and botanist who at various times served as dean of the medical school at Nuremberg, as an Imperial Counselor, and as personal physician to the Emperor. He was made a Pfalzgraf and served as a patron of botanical (and anatomical) illustrators, filling roughly the same position in Germany as that occupied by Sir Hans Sloane in England' (Cleveland Collections p.397). Trew was to remain a friend and patron of Ehret's throughout his life, and by 1742 the germ of what was to become the present publication was already under discussion when Trew wrote to Christian Thran in Carlsruhe 'Every year I receive some beautifully painted exotic plants [by Ehret] and have already more than one hundred of them, which with other pieces executed by local artists, should later on. constitute an appendicem to Weinmann's publication'. Ehret moved to London in the late 1730's, where he painted the recently introduced exotics at the Chelsea Physic Garden and established himself as a teacher of flower-painting and botany. Discussions about the projected work continued by letter until in 1748 when Johann Jacob Haid of Augsburg agreed to produce the engravings from Ehret's drawings. The first part was published in 1750, with six subsequent parts appearing before Trew's death 1769. The text to the final three parts remained unwritten and the plates to parts IX and X were still to be produced. The work was bought to a conclusion by Benedict Christian Vogel, Professor of Botany at the University of Altdorf. This copy does not include the engraved general title, or the portrait of Vogel but this 'is normal when the decuria [or part] titles are present' (Johnston Cleveland Collections p.397), it does however include what appears to be a rare preliminary text leaf not called for by either Hunt or Stafleu & Cowan, but possibly listed by Johnston. The two columns of text in German and Latin on the recto are headed 'Avertissement'. The German text ends with Haid's name and the date June 1750. The conclusion of the Latin text is on the verso, again in two columns, and takes up about a third of the page. The remainder of the page is taken up by a list in Latin, in three columns, headed 'Index plantarum, quarum imagines pinxit D. Ehretus / suntque Norimbergae in Museo D.D. Trew' followed by a list of 240 individual plants. 10 parts in one volume; folio (510 x 345 mm), engraved title in red & black, 3 mezzotint portraits of Trew, Ehret and Haid, 100 fine contemporary hand-coloured engraved plates after Georg Dionysius Ehret by Johann Jakob & E.D. Provenance: with the bookplate of Hjalmar Hartmann (1870 1945), Danish horticulturist and seed manufacturer. First edition, and the magnum opus of the long and fruitful collaboration between Trew and Georges Ehret, and Trew. Ehret traveled widely, sending back hundreds of botanical drawings and paintings, which were included in the present work. For "Plantae Selectae", the level of botanical interest and exotic appeal were how the two chose which illustrations to use. They had to decide on a way to present these tropical subjects to the public that had only recently been introduced to Europe. Johannes Jacobus and Johannes Elias Haid translated Ehret's exceptional and remarkably sensuous watercolors into hand-colored engravings that represented everything Ehret's work was about. Ehret had met Linnaeus in 1736 and the latter's work moved the artist to analyze the structure of the plant before trying to represent it. The Latin text was written by Trew and describes each plant, the history of its discovery and additional comments. Each species is compared with descriptions written by other botanical authors in order to definitively classify each plant. This great work was not finished until after Ehret's death, though his instructions were followed as to the layout. Linnaeus praised this work in a letter to Trew, calling it one of the great miracles of the century. Like his father before him Ehret trained as a gardener, initially working on estates of German nobility, and painting flowers only occasionally, another skill taught him by his father, who was a good draughtsman. Ehret s "first major sale of flower paintings came through Dr Christoph Joseph Trew, eminent physician and botanist of Nuremberg, who recognized his exceptional talent and became both patron and lifelong friend. Ehret sent him large batches of watercolours on the fine-quality paper Trew provided. In 1733 Trew taught Ehret the botanical importance of floral sexual organs and advised that he should show them in detail in his paintings. Many Ehret watercolours were engraved in Trew's works, such as Hortus Nitidissimus (1750 86) and Plantae selectae' (1750 1773) [as here], in part two of which (1751) Trew named the genus Ehretia after him. "During 1734 Ehret travelled in Switzerland and France, working as a gardener and selling his paintings. While at the Jardin des Plantes, Paris, he learned to use body-colour on vellum, thereafter his preferred medium. In 1735 he travelled to England with letters of introduction to patrons including Sir Hans Sloane and Philip Miller, curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden. In the spring of 1736 Ehret spent three months in the Netherlands. At the garden of rare plants of George Clifford, banker and director of the Dutch East India Company, he met the great Swedish naturalist, Carl Linnaeus, who was then formulating his new classification based on plant sexual organs. Ehret painted a Tabella (1736), illustrating the system, and sold engravings of it to bota. Signed by Author(s).…
